Alion Science and Technology is seeking an Aerospace Engineer to support the Defense Innovation Unit (DIU). This candidate will provide a range of support, within their area of expertise and experience, to the Space Portfolio Director / Technical Director in the field of aerospace systems engineering relevant to defense and commercial aerospace applications. This position is based in El Segundo, CA with expected travel of 10%.
Position Duties and Responsibilities:
- Provides expertise in space systems (spacecraft, reusable launch vehicles, satellites, sensors and related capabilities) to include solving relevant technical and programmatic problems and assessing the technical feasibility of commercial solutions.
- Works closely with DoD Partner(s) and commercial team(s) throughout the lifecycle of the prototype period of performance, including coordinating with the engineering and technical teams of all stakeholders in government and industry.
- Performs independent reviews and detailed technical assessments of commercial solutions and their applications.
- Provides reviews and assessments, systems analyses of aerospace technologies and operational concepts, system requirements, technical and performance analyses, test plans, executions, results, and related documentation.
- Reviews prototype proposals, reports and related project documents. Participates in pitch events and milestone / technical reviews.
- Participates in ground testing, flight tests, or simulations.
- Participates in post-test analysis activities, and the review / analysis of test data, when applicable.
- Prepares white papers, briefs and meeting minutes.
- Responds to official requests for information and other tasks from DoD Partners and stakeholders.
- Participate in key intra- and inter-agency meetings.
Professional Qualifications/Skills:
- Bachelor’s degree (BS/BA) in a engineering or related field, preferably in physics, aerospace or mechanical engineering, mathematics or a related field.
- A minimum of 10 years relevant work experience, with at least 3 years in subject matter expert or engineering positions.
- Experience in working on Department of Defense science and technology programs at a technical level.
- Ability to coordinate multi-discipline, multi-stakeholder projects that enhance national defense capabilities.
- Ability to communicate to a broad range of audiences.
- A demonstrated record of technical achievement in the development of aerospace technology for defense, civil and/or commercial applications, including hands-on design, build, or test experience.
- Ability to work in a dynamic team environment, interact with DoD Partners’ and commercial contractors’ engineering and technical staff.
- Excellent written and oral communications skills.
- Current Secret clearance with eligibility for TS/SCI after hire.
Desired:
- We highly desire a Top Secret (TS) clearance with Sensitive Compartmented Information (SCI) eligibility.
- 15 years’ experience in Defense-related Space System Engineering and Architectures.
- Specialization in reusable launch systems and space vehicles, on-orbit servicing, and space transportation architecture.
