Position Summary

This position will support an environmental laboratory in Edison, NJ


Responsible for planning, organizing and conducting scientific projects or phases of projects involving design and development of new or improved product and/or processes. Defines and conducts moderately complex scientific measurements and experiments. Records and evaluates data. Develops models describing technical phenomena; evaluates available analytical models for application to specific areas of analyses. Performs moderately complex analysis and trouble-shooting. Responsible for the setup, assembly, use, maintenance, and calibration of equipment (specifically mass spectrometer) and processes. Interacts with sponsor staff responsible for monitoring projects. Reviews progress and defines project priorities, schedules and objectives. Develops and maintains frequent contacts with customers.

Assists in identifying opportunities for new program initiatives and follow-on tasking for current projects and participates in proposal efforts. Prepares and assists others in the development of status reports, letters, technical memoranda, contact reports, technical analyses or other outputs needed. Prepares and provides formal briefings to staff and customers and participates in technical discussions at project review sessions and in negotiations with the customer. Acts as task leader in efforts that are moderately complex in scope.

Operate and maintain calibration of state-of-the-art instrumentation in a 24-hour ready-mode to analyze the soil, water, drum waste, sediments, biological tissues and air samples collected from various hazardous waste sites and emergency chemical releases. Perform the analyses using EPA approved methods (SW846, EPA 500 series, and Contract Laboratory Program [CLP]) and National Institute of Safety and Health (NIOSH) methods, whenever said methods exist. Perform sample analyses of wastes, soil, air, biological tissues, and other media. Methodology may include nonstandard analytical procedures. Perform organic and inorganic analyses on samples of water, soil and air at uncontrolled hazardous waste sites or spills/releases of oil or hazardous substances.

Assist in operation and maintenance of fixed and mobile laboratories. Extract and perform analyses of hazardous chemicals in matrices, such as soil, sludge, water, drum waste, biological tissue, and air samples on media (Tenax, charcoal, XAD, Puffs, and other absorbing media) using EPA- approved methods. Conduct on-site, multi-media, organic and inorganic chemical analyses. Conduct on-site air monitoring and multi-media sampling. Conduct sampling operations under Level A (total-encapsulating protective gear) conditions.

Recommend options for evaluation and improvement of analytical and monitoring methodologies for use on multi-media hazardous wastes. Extract and perform analyses of dioxins/furans and other high-hazard chemicals in matrices such as soils, sludge, drum wastes, waters, biological tissues, and air sampling media using EPA approved methods (SW 846).



Education and Experience

  • Bachelor's degree in chemistry or a related scientific discipline with 30 hours of chemistry plus 5 to 7 years of directly related experience. A MS degree in chemistry or physical sciences with 30 hours of chemistry and ten or more years of experience as an analytical chemist preferred.
  • Five years of hands-on experience using and repairing inductively coupled plasma/mass spectrometer instruments. Experience with EPA regulations and policies is preferred.
  • Excellent verbal and written communications and interpersonal skills are mandatory.

Knowledge, Skills, Abilities:

  • Ability to think critically.
  • Knowledge of chemical/physical principles, theories, and established methodologies sufficient to perform the full range of duties involved in conducting research projects.
  • Must be able to obtain a Public Trust Certificate upon hire.
