Job Description

Alion is currently seeking a highly self-motivated Mechanical Engineer to join our Tactical Sensor Systems team in Syracuse, NY. We are looking for a candidate who can make an immediate impact as part of the research and development, assembly, and manufacturing team. In this role, you will work with a group of highly-skilled engineers and support personnel to design, debug, develop and productize complex electro-mechanical devices for military applications.  You will have the ability to bring additional depth and expertise to our rapid prototyping capabilities.

The Mechanical Engineer responsibilities may include design and development of complex electro-mechanical products, Structural Engineering Finite Element Analysis, modeling and simulation of concept designs, interfacing with external vendors and internal fabrication, creation of technical data package, developing and executing product testing and integration plans for new or updated products.  Characteristics of a successful candidate include attention to detail, creativity, focus on customer expectation, willingness to work outside comfort-zone, effective written and presentation skills.

As an associate, short term expectations are to learn various aspects of mechanical engineering while simultaneously learning how mechanical design fits into the overall product design.  Long-term goal is to be able to conceptualize product requirements and flow those requirements to various sub-systems such as hardware, electronics, software, etc.  Learning to balance sub-system requirements will allow overall design to be optimized, thereby maximizing value to the customer.  Mentors will include senior staff knowledgeable in mechanical, electrical, system, and software engineering; production; quality; test; and program management.  Works on advanced, complex technical projects or business issues requiring state of the art technical or industry knowledge. With assistant from senior staff, provides input to project managers on programmatic and technical deliverables.

Knowledge, Skills, Abilities:

Bachelor’s degree in the field of Mechanical Engineering or similar

Familiarity with Structural Engineering Finite Element Analysis (FAE) using tools such as Ansys Mechanical, including thermal, shock, vibration, and yield margin analysis.  Forward thinking to perform optimizations and “what if” scenarios.

Familiarity with rapid prototyping and modeling and simulation tools such as Creo, SolidWorks, and AutoCAD.

A team player with the demonstrated ability to participate in cross-functional teams and communicate and coordinate work as one team with common goals

Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, including a demonstrated ability to interact effectively with customers, suppliers, management, and peers.

Ability to analyze complex functions, procedures, and problems to find creative, logical and effective solutions. 

Technical writing skills, including familiarity with Microsoft Office
