Job Description

With more than 80 years of experience engineering science and technology solutions to support national security, Alion supports clients with big ideas and real solutions. The Physicist will perform plasmonics research in support of Air Force Research Laboratory (AFRL) basic research thrusts. Receive guidance from AFRL researchers and independently complete research tasks. Build and/or apply numerical simulations of electromagnetic systems. Perform finite element method (FEM) numerical simulations. Work with and analyze plasmonic nanoparticles, photonic crystals and fiber or nanorod arrays. Follow all applicable AFRL regulations and laboratory safety protocols.


  • PhD in Physics or closely related physical science field with a minimum of 5 years related working experience.
  • Experience in the field of numerical simulations of electromagnetic systems.
  • Extensive experience in finite element method (FEM) numerical simulations.
  • Experience in researching plasmonics and plasmonic nanoparticles.
  • Experience with periodic photonic structures such as photonic crystals and fiber or nanorod arrays.
  • Experience with metamaterials.

Preferred qualifications:

  • At least 20 years’ experience preferred.
  • Experience with lasers, laser safety and handling.
  • Previous experience working with DoD labs is preferred.
  • Experience with Comsol Multiphysics software is preferred.
  • Experience in integrated electro-optical systems is preferred.
  • Supercomputing experience including familiarity with massively parallel systems and MPI is preferred.
