Job Description

Position Summary

Alion Science and Technology Corporation is seeking a Radiation Safety Officer to provide Systems Engineering and Integration (SE&I) support to a major DoD Agency located in Albuquerque, NM at Kirtland AFB for operational test events. Minimal travel (<10%) to the Nevada National Security Site, NV may be required.

Responsibilities:

  • Perform the duties of the Radiological Safety Officer (RSO), Laser Safety officer and test team member, including :
    • Serve as the SME on all things related to safety, security, and incident response for tests/experiments/R&D efforts involving radioactive sources/materials.
    • Serve as the SME on all things pertaining to the procurement, storage, use, shipment, transfer, transportation, and disposal of radioactive sources/materials used in tests/experiments/R&D efforts.
    • Ensure that all NRC regulations and requirements are met and followed explicitly at the test sites where test/experiments/R&D efforts using radioactive sources/materials of any type are conducted.
    • Maintain all required documentation pertaining to procurement, storage, utilization, shipment, transfer, transportation, and disposal of radioactive sources/materials.
    • Administer the customer’s dosimetry program for test personnel, Authorized Users, and other personnel that may come in proximity to radioactive sources/materials on test sites.
    • Conduct periodic radiation surveys, sampling, inventories, and inspections IAW RSO and NRC requirements.
    • Coordinate with Kirtland AFB RSO regarding customer’s radiological materials and activities; maintain close contact with the customer’s RSO and ensure compliance with all guidance set forth by that office.
  • Provide local oversight for the customer’s broad scope radiologic license.
  • Review/recommend radiological controls and requirements for specific research and test events.
  • Maintain the radiologic inventory, conduct the periodic leak sampling, maintain the sampling equipment and maintain documentation as required by the license and the customer’s RSO.
  • Train and document local users of radioactive material IAW the customer’s broadscope radioactive license and industry standard radioactive safety procedures.
  • Perform and oversee all requirements to process, ship, and receive Class 7 Radioactive Material. 
  • Review potential test programs and provide recommendations on whether the customer can conduct the test event and what limitations may exist or be required.

Education and Experience:

  • Bachelor’s degree and experience in physical, chemical, biological sciences, or engineering fields of study and a minimum of 3 years’ experience working directly with radiation safety, protection, and licensing in a test and evaluation (T&E) environment is required.
  • Required Training/Certifications (must already have):

Radiation Safety Officer (RSO) course or equivalent to NRC guidelines - 40 Hour Course

Radiation Safety Officer (RSO) Qualified under NRC Broad Scope License, ANSI Z136.1

Laser Safety Officer (LSO) Certification

Part I Certification Health Physicist (CHP) by American Board of Health Physics (complete Part II within 6 month of assignment to the contract)

  • US Citzenship required:must have active/current Top Secret (TS) with ability to obtain TS/SCI.
  • Knowledge of the principles, practices, and procedures used in radiation safety and protection.
  • Training in and knowledge of the following subjects:
    • Radiation protection principles
    • Characteristics of ionizing radiation
    • Units of radiation dose and quantities
    • Radiation detection instrumentation
    • Biological hazards of exposure to radiation (appropriate to types and forms of byproduct material to be used)
    • NRC regulatory (NUREG) requirements and standards
    • Hands-on use of radioactive materials
  • Effective organization level communication, presentation and interpersonal skills.
  • MS Office proficiency and ability to work in an individual and team environment.
  • Experience in constructing testbeds for Chemical, Biological, Radiological, Nuclear, and/or High Explosives test events.
