Job Description




The Joint Staff J7 (JSJ7) Senior System Administrator is responsible for the continuous operation of complex servers, networks and related infrastructure supporting physical and virtual information systems for the JSJ7.


  • Installs new software releases, patches, updates and managers the overall configuration to ensure it is up to date and secure.
  • Develops backup and recovery procedures and disaster recovery plans.  Coordinates technical tasking, training and priority with junior system administrators.
  • Maintains smooth operation of complex multi-user computer systems, including coordination with network administrators. 
  • Builds and configures virtual client pools and servers using VMWare and/or other Type 1 hypervisors. 
  • Configures both Windows and Linux operating environments, builds automation scripts using advanced scripting languages to include powershell, bash, ansible and/or puppet.
  • Installs new software releases in accordance with best practices and DoD cybersecurity policy, system upgrades, evaluates and installs patches and resolves complex software related problems.  
  • Hardens operating system environment using Security Template Implementation Guidelines (STIGs) and Security Resource Guides (SRGs).
  • Uses systems management software to monitor servers and applications, troubleshooting problems and coordinating with other teams when problems occur.
  • Develops, tests and maintains a disaster recovery plan.
  • Supports applications development project teams with the development of test servers, testing new system configurations and consulting on difficult system performance issues.
  • Tests and evaluates network hardware and software to determine compatibility with current systems.
  • Performs equipment reviews, development of maintenance histories, management and maintenance of hardware inventories.
  • Supports site upgrades, site inspections, site audits, or other site evaluations.
  • Develops and maintains system documentation. Develops and monitors policies and standards for allocation related to the use of computing resources.
  • Develops network, news, and host security policies. Assigns passwords and monitors uses of resources.
  • Monitors network traffic and makes necessary recommendations for additional resources or hardware.
  • Performs system backups and recovery.
  • Provides guidance to less experienced Systems Administrators.
  • Performs additional duties and responsibilities as assigned.

Education and Experience

  • Must have a Bachelor's Degree in a related field and 5-7years or relevant work experience
  • Excellent interpersonal skills.
  • Strong analytical skills and attention to detail.
  • Strong knowledge of the principles, practices, and procedures used in systems administration.
  • Related technical certifications may be required.
  • A security clearance of an appropriate level may be required after employment.  Active Secret clearance is preferred.
