Job Description

Commonwealth Technology, Inc, (CTI) a division of Alion Science, is an engineering services firm with diverse in-house manufacturing capabilities for prototype and low volume production. Our customized products seamlessly blend technology and tradecraft.  Even though our parent company, Alion, is a large business, CTI preserves our small company feel and our staff earn a sense of accomplishment by making meaningful contributions to our nation’s security priorities.  With some of the most comprehensive fabrication assets in Northern Virginia, including a full in-house machine shop, composite fabrication, finishing and electronics assembly capabilities, your work will quickly become fieldable hardware.

The Cabinetmaker will be capable of performing a wide range of tasks such as:

  • Fabricates, repairs and assembles wooden and wood-like (composite) components from drawings and computer aided design models.  Work ranges from framing, structural work, freight preparation and finish carpentry to high end furniture.  Plan sequence of cutting or shaping operations to be performed.  Fabricate or repair wooden cabinets, other furniture and 3D shapes in composite materials to standards that meet or exceed furniture-grade.  Install hardware as required.  Finish using stains, urethane, lacquer and paints if required.  Sets up and operates a variety of woodworking machines (including computer numerical controlled (CNC)) and uses various hand tools.  Familiar with standard concepts, practices and procedures.  A high degree of creativity is required.
  • Layup of composite materials, including building molds with the structural strength to support casting composite products, and infusing materials with composite materials to add strength.
  • Coordinates with Program Managers, Technical Managers and Engineers to review designs and assess manufacturability.
  • Relies on extensive experience and judgement to plan and accomplish work.
  • Expert at judging finish quality.  Performs fault finding and problem solving.
  • Provides input to labor and cost estimates to produce parts, assemble, and finished products for proposals, including materials costs.
  • Leads and directs the work of others.
  • Reports to a supervisor/manager.  Assignments are given in terms of objectives, resources and materials available, and budget.

Experience:

• Demonstrated experience in finish carpentry and fine woodworking/shaping.

• Experience in using hand tools and bench/table mounted woodworking equipment, including table saws, band saws, radial arm saws, belt and disk sanders, drill presses, joiners, planers, routers and lathes.  Experience using MasterCam to program CNC routers and other machine-controlled woodworking tools.

• Some problem diagnosis and problem solving resulting from non-operational equipment would be expected.

• Experience of team or project leadership. Demonstrated excellent communications skills (oral and writing)

• Must have or be eligible for a US Security Clearance.
