Position Summary

Under immediate supervision of the analytical group leader, assists with analysis of various environmental matrices to determine environmental contaminant composition and to investigate potential applications to remedial investigations and environmental public health concerns. Disciplines include primarily inorganic chemistry, organic chemistry, and analytical chemistry.

Duties and Responsibilities:           

  • Under direct supervision of the analytical group leader, responsible for performing accurate analytical procedures in accordance with established EPA methods and/or other standard operating procedures. Specifically, conducting analytical metals preparation by methods 200.2 for water, soil and waste matrices as well as 200.3 for tissue samples. TCLP experience is highly desirable for inorganic compounds and analyses.
  • Execute experiments to assist in conducting qualitative and quantitative chemical analyses and experiments.
  • Works with staff in the laboratory in the conduct of scientific measurements and experiments.  records and evaluates data.
  • Performs routine analyses and trouble-shooting.
  • Responsible for the setup, assembly, use, maintenance, and calibration of bench-top analytical equipment and processes.
  • Develops relationships with customers and updates the program manager and/or the analytical group leader on program/project status.
  • Assists in identifying opportunities for new program initiatives and follow-on tasking for current projects and may participate in proposal efforts through the development of supporting information and data.
  • Acts as liaison with other departments, divisions, and organizations.
  • Participates in the activities of professional societies.
  • Prepares and assists others in the development of status reports, emails, technical memoranda, technical analyses or other outputs needed.
  • Assists with the preparation of formal briefings to staff and customers and may participate in technical discussions at project review sessions.
  • May perform validation, technology transfer and troubleshooting.
  • Works on problems of moderate scope in which analysis of situation or data requires a review of identifiable factors.  Exercises judgment within defined procedures and practices to determine appropriate action.
  • Performs additional duties and responsibilities as assigned.

Education and Experience

  • Bachelor’s degree in Chemistry or a related scientific discipline plus 0 to 2 years of directly related experience.
  • In some cases, educational requirements may be adjusted or waived for comparable work experience. Work experience may be adjusted for highly specialized knowledge or uniquely applicable experience for positions involving new technology or labor market shortages as reflected by 
  • market survey data.
  • A Public Trust Security clearance will be required after employment.

Knowledge, Skills, Abilities

  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills and the ability to think critically.
  • Knowledge of chemical/physical principles, theories, and established methodologies sufficient to perform the full range of duties involved in conducting research projects.
