Job Description



Responsibilities/Qualification

(General) Responsible for planning, organizing and conducting scientific projects or phases of projects involving design and development of new or improved product and/or processes. Defines and conducts moderately complex scientific measurements and experiments. Records and evaluates data. Develops models describing technical phenomena; evaluates available analytical models for application to specific areas of analyses. Performs moderately complex analysis and trouble-shooting. Responsible for the setup, assembly, use, maintenance, and calibration of equipment (specifically mass spectrometer) and processes. Interacts with sponsor staff responsible for monitoring projects. Reviews progress and defines project priorities, schedules and objectives. Develops and maintains frequent contacts with customers.

Assists in identifying opportunities for new program initiatives and follow-on tasking for current projects and participates in proposal efforts. Prepares and assists others in the development of status reports, letters, technical memoranda, contact reports, technical analyses or other outputs needed. Prepares and provides formal briefings to staff and customers and participates in technical discussions at project review sessions and in negotiations with the customer.

(Site Specific) - Performs and maintains the proficient day-today operations of analytical equipment including data validation and report preparation. Assists with sample login, sample prep, and general lab tests. Evaluates operations and makes recommendations to improve operations. Selects an established method or extends & modifies a procedure, carries out analysis & tests required. Performs analyses & tests, which usually include physical measurements, wet lab tests & instrumental analyses such as GC/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Participates in planning & strategy meetings.

Suggests modifications to existing  protocols & standing operating procedures, equipment, processes or techniques. Participates in evaluation process to include set up, operation & monitoring of equip & apparatus, & more complex experimental procedures involving novel samples. Provides technical guidance, instruction & oversight. Assists with lab maintenance. Schedules experiments, suggests new equip, summarizes & records data in official notebooks, orders supplies & maintains a safe working environment.



Qualifications

Accredited Bachelor's degree in chemistry or a related scientific discipline with 30 hours of chemistry plus 2 to 4 years of directly related experience. An MS degree in chemistry or physical sciences with 30 hours of chemistry preferred. 2 to 4 years of hands-on experience using and repairing Analytical instruments (GC/MS, or LC/MS/MS). Familiar with a variety of analytical chemistry concepts, practices, and procedures including EPA SW-846. Experience with EPA regulations and policies is preferred.

Excellent verbal and written communications and interpersonal skills are mandatory. A certain degree of creativity and latitude is required. Works under general supervision and reports to the Supervisor/Lead Chemist.

Familiarity with EPA methods is required.

Knowledge, Skills, Abilities

Excellent written and verbal communication skills. Ability to think critically. Knowledge of chemical/physical principles, theories, and established methodologies sufficient to perform the full range of duties involved in conducting research projects.

Must be able to obtain a Public Trust Certificate upon hire.
