Job Description



Assists with the planning, design, and implementation of an afloat Command, Control, and Communications system.  Provides full expert level support and maintenance for all shipboard Local Area Networks, and RF systems.  Will support system installation designs, software and equipment layout, installing, modifying, testing (in-port/underway), operating complex systems and developing test plans.


The Communications Engineer will assist with requirements for selecting, installing, integrating and testing commercial maritime SATCOM and LoS communications systems.  He/she will apply their knowledge of existing afloat communications systems towards new system designs.  The Communications Engineer will also participate in and oversee the design and development of the physical layout, network topologies, and integration requirements for afloat communication systems. 

The Communications Engineer will develop and/or review ship installation documents and engineering drawings to ensure compliance with current MIL-STD and physical/network security requirements.  He/she will assist with systems integration testing before, during, and after the installation process.

More specifically, the communications engineer will assist with developing network and external communications plan for an unmanned surface vessel (USV) prototype system.  Perform moderately complex telecommunications network analysis, design, implementation and maintenance for afloat communications systems.  Conducts communications system engineering studies to determine current and future system design requirements. Performs additional duties and responsibilities as assigned.


  • Must be a U.S. citizen

  • Must hold an active Secret clearance, or be able to obtain an interim clearance

  • (8+) years - Experience working with the following areas: shipboard network configuration and troubleshooting (servers, routers, firewalls, etc.), communications, navigation, command and control and/or integrated electronic control systems, or hold a Bachelor’s Degree in Information Technology or communications related discipline and (4+) years’ experience with shipboard network and RF communications systems

  • Subject matter expert of afloat communications systems and theory

  • Must have excellent analytical troubleshooting capabilities

  • Must be able to obtain and retain DoD IAT Level II certification

  • Experience and/or knowledge of COMSEC space certification requirements a plus

  • Must be self-motivated


  • Experience with USV systems preferred

  • IT Certifications: Security +, Microsoft Windows Server 2008 or equivalent, VMWare, CCNA, and/or MCSE are a plus

  • Must possess excellent attention to detail, strong organizational skills, as well as excellent written and verbal communication skills

  • Ability to work well independently or in a team environment

  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office products

  • Prior afloat CSICP experience desired
