Responsibilities/Qualification

Position Summary:

This position supports the DDG-1000 program office (PMS 500E) in the completion of the DDG-1000 ship class. The primary work location is Alexandria, VA with  communication and frequent visits to customer at Washington DC Navy Yard.

Education and Requirements:

Bachelor’s degree in Engineering ; Naval Architecture , Marine Engineering  or related scientific discipline plus 8 years relevant work experience. 

In some cases, educational requirements may be adjusted or waived for more than 15 years of applicable work experience.  Work experience may be adjusted based on education, or highly specialized knowledge or uniquely applicable experience for positions involving new technology or labor market shortages as reflected by market survey data.

Minimum 3 years of experience in Marine Engineering incuding damage control and associated shipboard systems is required.

This requires knowledge of how damage control systems work and preferably knowledge of how ship damage events (fire, flooding, etc) work.

Knowledge of the following systems (required):

  • High pressure watermist
  • Low pressure watermist
  • Firemain
  • Magazine sprinkling
  • AFFF
  • Gaseous firefighting (especially HFP)

Knowledge of damage events (preferred):

  • Fire (ignition, spread, extinguishment)
  • Flooding
  • Blast

Must be a U.S.Citizen and SECRET level clearance or clearance eliglible

Job Functions:

Responsibilities will include:

  • Answering questions regarding system functionality and requirements 
  • Planning and conducting tests (pier-side and potentially at-sea)
    • May include to travel to San Diego, CA and/or Bath, ME
  • Evaluating cause and effect for risk analysis
  • Planning solutions to technical issues as they are discovered
  • Reviewing engineering modification work packages
  • Monitoring technical issues through to final correction
  • Negotiating requirements relief with the Technical Warrant Holder community
  • Extensive communication with a variety of Navy personnel around the US
