Position Summary

Would you like to explore cutting edge technology that directly impacts U.S. Navy surface ship readiness? This new position will support a recently established artificial intelligence project responsible for predicting the duration of U.S. Navy surface ship maintenance periods. If you are looking for a challenging and rewarding position then this is the job for you.

Professional data scientist/database engineer on a project or program that is complex in concept and development related to military operations and strategy.  Customize new artificial intelligence products based on thorough knowledge of the database design, utilizing quantitative and qualitative theory, and data science principles.

Under the direction of a project, program, and/or division manager, and a government customer, performs multi-faceted assignments, customization of databases and software.  Utilizes effective theory, concepts and principles in the development and implementation of analytic models and systems.  Assesses and recommends the feasibility of proposed approaches to solve problems.

U.S. Navy/NAVSEA experience is a plus.

Duties and Responsibilities

Under general supervision, assists in providing technical expertise for database design, implementation, information storage and retrieval, data flow, and analysis.

Use predictive modeling, machine learning, data mining, and/or any other data analysis techniques to extract insights from large unstructured or structured data sets

Codes complex programs and derives logical processes on technical platforms.

Design and run large-scale experiments that validate the appropriateness of a proposed approach.

Assists in the design of user interface and business application prototypes.

Participates in quality assurance and develops test application code in client server environment.

Adapts business requirements, developed by modeling/development staff and systems engineers, and develops the data, database specifications, and table and element attributes for an application.

Responsible for developing a database structure that fits into the overall system and design.

Translates sets of requirements and data into useable documents.

Periodic travel may be required.

Performs additional duties and responsibilities as required.

Education and Experience
Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering or similar field plus 2 to 4 years of directly related experience. 

Master’s degree in Computer Science, Applied Mathematics, Statistics, Cognitive Science, Predictive Analytics or Computational Linguistics is a plus.

In some cases, educational requirements may be adjusted or waived for applicable work experience. Work experience may be adjusted for highly specialized knowledge or uniquely applicable experience for positions involving new technology or labor market shortages as reflected by market survey data.

Knowledge, Skills, Abilities

Expertise/knowledge of concepts in machine learning, natural language processing, cognitive computing, data science, and/or artificial intelligence.

Working knowledge of Linux with scripting/programming language experience. Understanding of Linux, Python, and Java.

Demonstrated talent in software/database architecture, experimental design, and evaluation.

Ability to communicate and work effectively in a diverse work group.

Excellent organizational level communication, interpersonal and presentation skills.

Proficiency in Microsoft applications.

Must have an active SECRET clearance.
