Position Summary

 Alion Science and Technology is seeking a Designer to assist in the cleanup/improvement, operation, maintenance and technical overhaul/repair manuals through the development of illustrations, and models. The applicant will be responsible for preparing moderately complex sketches, drawings and models on design projects.  The applicant will work independently on the development of original designs or adaptations requiring specialized experience.

 Duties and Responsibilities          

 Draws structural, mechanical, or electrical features of related structures and equipment. 

 Reviews literature, standards and current practices relevant to the solution of assigned projects.

 Prepares sketches or complete detail and layout drawings from notes received from Engineers or Senior Designers. 

 Calculates and lays out dimensions, angles, curvature of parts, materials to be used, and relationship of various parts to the entire structure. 

 Creates preliminary and/or final drawings and models using standard drafting techniques using computer assisted design.

 Confers with design originator, appropriate engineering and other personnel in finalizing design concepts.

 May review completion and implementation of systems additions and/or enhancements and recommends corrections in technical application and analysis to management.

 Performs additional duties and responsibilities as assigned.

 Education and Experience

Associate’s degree, or technical training in a related discipline, or the equivalent combination of education, technical training, or work experience and at least 4 years related experience.

 In some cases, educational requirements may be adjusted or waived for comparable work experience. Work experience may be adjusted for highly specialized knowledge or uniquely applicable experience for positions involving new technology or labor market shortages as reflected by 
market survey data.

 Knowledge, Skills, Abilities

 Related experience interpreting design requirements and preparing design alternatives.

 Knowledge of Computer-Aided Design (CAD) and/or traditional drafting methods.

 3D Parametric modeling and 2D drafting experience is a must. SolidWorks 3D modeling experience is preferred, other acceptable software includes; Unigraphics NX, AutoDesk Inventor, Catia, Pro/Engineer, and Solid Edge.

 Experience creating line art for technical illustrations using graphic software including; Canvas, Adobe Illustrator, Adobe Photoshop, Gimp, and IsoDraw.

 Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.

 A security clearance of an appropriate level may be required after
