Qualifications

Position Summary

Looking for a talented designer to work on a new vessel development in a rapid prototyping environment.

As the organizational expert in the field, prepares original and highly complex sketches, drawings and models on difficult design projects requiring the exercise of considerable initiative, latitude, and independent judgment. Works independently on the development of original designs or adaptations requiring very specialized experience and the application of expert drafting techniques and thorough knowledge of practical fabrication techniques.

Duties and Responsibilities           

Draws structural, mechanical, or electrical features of related structures and equipment.  

Reviews literature, standards and current practices relevant to the solution of assigned projects.

Prepares sketches or complete detail and layout drawings from verbal or written instructions on highly complex projects. 

Calculates and lays out dimensions, angles, curvature of parts, materials to be used, and relationship of various parts to the entire structure.  

Creates preliminary and/or final drawings and models using standard drafting techniques using computer assisted design.

Confers with design originator, appropriate engineering and other personnel in finalizing design concepts.

May review completion and implementation of systems additions and/or enhancements and recommends corrections in technical application and analysis to management.

Provides work guidance for other Designers and Drafters.

Performs additional duties and responsibilities as assigned.

Education and Experience

Bachelor’s Degree in a related discipline (Mechanical or Electrical Engineering preferred), or the equivalent combination of education, technical training, or work experience and 10 to 12 years related experience.

Education and work experience may be adjusted for highly specialized knowledge or uniquely applicable experience.

Knowledge, Skills, Abilities

Expert ability in interpreting design requirements and preparing design alternatives.

Strong proficiency in Computer-Aided Design (CAD) and/or traditional drafting methods. Must be proficient in AutoCAD and either Inventor or Solidworks.

Must have experience with drawing preparation and review processes and configuration managemetn processes.

Must be familiar with shipboard machinery systems.

Knowledge of Navy shipboard systems is preferred.

Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.

Demonstrated leadership skills.

A security clearance of an appropriate level will be required after employment.
