Position Summary

As the organizational expert in the field, prepares original and highly complex sketches, drawings and models on difficult design projects requiring the exercise of considerable initiative, latitude, and independent judgment using Autodesk Inventor. Works independently on the development of original designs or adaptations requiring very specialized experience and the application of expert drafting techniques and thorough knowledge of practical fabrication techniques.

Duties and Responsibilities          

Draws structural, mechanical, or electrical features of related structures and equipment. 

Reviews literature, standards and current practices relevant to the solution of assigned projects.

Prepares sketches or complete detail and layout drawings from verbal or written instructions on highly complex projects.

Calculates and lays out dimensions, angles, curvature of parts, materials to be used, and relationship of various parts to the entire structure. 

Creates preliminary and/or final drawings and models using standard drafting techniques using computer assisted design.

Confers with design originator, appropriate engineering and other personnel in finalizing design concepts.

May review completion and implementation of systems additions and/or enhancements and recommends corrections in technical application and analysis to management.

Provides work guidance for other Designers and Drafters.

Performs additional duties and responsibilities as assigned.

Education and Experience

Bachelor’s Degree in a related discipline, or the equivalent combination of education, technical training, or work experience and 10 to 12 years related experience.

Education and work experience may be adjusted for highly specialized knowledge or uniquely applicable experience.

Knowledge, Skills, Abilities

Minimum of 5 years’ experience performing parametric modeling using one or more of the following:

  • Solidworks
  • Catia
  • Pro-E

Minimum of two years of experience with Autodesk Inventor.

Demonstrated experience that includes one or more of the following specific areas: Navy ship topside design standards, such as antenna and numbering standards, importing existing CAD models into Autodesk Inventor format, developing models that will be used for electromagnetic simulations of radio-frequency propagation involving shipboard antennas, generate and maintain 23D CAD models of U.S. Navy ships and other structure for use in ITD and Computational Electromagnetic (CEM) analyses. CAD model assemblies with greater than 100 components.

Expert ability in interpreting design requirements and preparing design alternatives.

Strong proficiency in Computer-Aided Design (CAD) and/or traditional drafting methods.

Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.

Demonstrated leadership skills.

A security clearance of an appropriate level may be required after employment.
