Job Description



Responsibilities/Qualification

(General) Maintains regulatory compliance with OSHA, EPA, and sponsors. Develops and/or reviews health and safety manuals, guides, reports, proposals, procedures, etc. Participates in moderately complex inspections of facilities to ensure a safe and healthful work environment. Investigates occupationally related injuries and illnesses and determines remedial action to be taken in order to prevent any recurrence. Consults with technical staff on methods to reduce the risk of occupationally related injuries and illnesses from project and non-project activities. Maintains Respirator Protection Program, Hazard Communication Program, Chemical Hygiene Program, and other OSHA-required programs. Maintains Hazardous Waste Management system, including all reporting requirements.

May develop and participate in company training programs for employees in areas such as compliance training, lab/plant inspection, hazardous material handling, emergency response, industrial hygiene, and life safety. Acts as a resource to all corporate staff for matters of occupational safety, health, and environmental issues. Stays abreast of new developments in government requirements and recommends changes to management in policies and procedures to ensure compliance.  May prepare and present reports, briefings, studies, or other information to management.

(Location-specific) - Develops, implements and maintains company policies adhering to local, state and federal environmental, health and safety regulations. Involved in work areas and work procedures and makes environmental, health and  safety recommendations accordingly. Responsible for preparing, maintaining, and updating environmental policy and procedure manuals. Ensures compliance with all environmental, health and safety regulations, and keeps abreast of any changes to laws and regulations that impact the organization. Formulates and maintains the Chemical Hygiene Plan, and manages the laboratory waste. Tracks and assures the status of worker H&S requirements, training, and records. Manages appropriate documents and identifying safety measures. Acts as an adviser on health and safety issues regarding projects, tasks, and operations. Reports to the Program Manager.



Qualifications

Accredited Bachelor's degree in a scientific, engineering, environmental, or industrial hygiene discipline and two to four years of directly related experience in a non-clinical laboratory. Master's degree preferred.

Direct experience health and safety standard concepts, practices, and procedures.  Knowledge of and experience with relevant EPA and OSHA regulations and methods is required. Excellent verbal and written communications skills and attention to detail are mandatory. Relies on extensive experience and judgment to plan and accomplish goals. Performs a variety of complex tasks. A certain degree of creativity and latitude is required.

In some cases, educational requirements may be adjusted or waived for more than 7 years applicable work experience. Work experience may be adjusted for highly specialized knowledge or uniquely applicable experience for positions involving new technology or labor market shortages as reflected by market survey data.

Must be able to obtain a Public Trust Certificate upon hire.
