We have a temporary work assignment for a field scientist to collect ambient air samples over a multi-state, environmental monitoring network.

Your focus will be performing Air Monitoring using the PM2.5 and TSP-Pb equipment, QA/QC reporting, and equipment maintenance/calibration.

Duties and Responsibilities

During the four-month, work assignment, you will be on travel approximately 90% of the time, through New Mexico, Oklahoma, Arkansas, Louisiana, and Texas.

Specifics of the assignment, including your day-to-day responsibilities:

  • Driving a Chevrolet Express cargo van to sites throughout the five-state region.
  • Physically conveying BGI (PQ2000) and Tisch air monitors to target areas, located on sampling platforms or tops of buildings, taking down monitors at the completion of run, and shipping filters to weighing laboratories.
  • Thinking through challenges that arise in the course of field work, and implement successful solutions
  • Setting-up, calibrating, and initiating operation of monitors.
  • Providing accurate, timely technical reports (weekly, monthly, and event-driven), communicating status orally from field, and coordinating sampling events with State, Local, and Tribal authorities.
  • Troubleshooting, maintaining, and repairing air monitoring equipment.


Education and Experience

Requires a Bachelor's degree in Physical or Life Sciences (Chemistry, Physics, Biology or equivalent) with 2 years of applicable work experience.


Knowledge, Skills, Abilities

The successful candidate:

  • Works comfortably at remote locations, and enjoys travel.
  • Drives comfortably for extended periods, has a good driving record, a valid driver's license, and is insurable.
  • Performs strenuous physical work (involving repetitive motion with hands and lifting up to 50 pounds), and is comfortable using ladders,
  • Solves problems, is resourceful, and thinks independently.
  • Possesses great attention to detail, and performs careful determination of precise visual measurements.
  • Possesses excellent communication skills (both written and oral), and a basic knowledge of word processing and spreadsheet software.
  • Has good mechanical aptitude and interest.

Must be US Citizen; no sponsorship available. Position is based in Houston, Texas. Applicant will successfully complete Public Trust Certification prior to final hire.
