The Fleet Synthetic Training at Sea Subject Matter Expert (FST at Sea SME) is a member of the Navy Continuous Training Environment (NCTE) Integrated Systems Division (ISD) engineering staff in support of the Navy Training Baseline (NTB), Navy distributed training systems and capabilities, and the NCTE.  The ISD provides systems engineering solutions for the integration of NCTE live, virtual and constructive (LVC) distributed training simulation technologies in support of US Fleet Forces (USFF) and the Numbered Fleets’ training and certification requirements.

The FST at Sea SME will install and maintain temporary (non-permanent change) fiber installations on ships that enable ship training system participation in LVC training events. The FST at Sea SME will also provide expert operational and technical knowledge in regards to Aegis and Ship Self Defense System (SSDS) combat systems while in a distributed, synthetic training environment. Additionally, the SME will perform engineering and project management activities in support of USFFC and the Numbered Fleets synthetic training and mission certification events for deploying ships.

Duties and Responsibilities:

•         Install and configure FST at Sea non-permanent change (NPC)

•         Investigate Aegis, SSDS shipboard capabilities and limitations as they relate to NCTE training interfaces

•         Draft point papers, presentations and other correspondence related to ship training system issues

•         Attend meetings as directed by NSWC Corona and the assigned NCTE staff.

Education and Experience

Bachelor’s degree plus 2 to 4 years of relevant work experience.  Degree must be in Engineering, Computer Science, Mathematics or a related discipline.

In some cases, educational requirements may be adjusted for comparable work experience.  Work experience may be adjusted based on education, or highly specialized knowledge or uniquely applicable experience for positions involving new technology or labor market shortages as reflected by market survey data.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

•         Proficient with the BFTT KG-175 encryption device operation including configuration setup and crypto loading procedures.

•         Possesses working knowledge of Navy Link architectures and setup to include LOS Link, and UTJ Link operations 

•         Possesses working knowledge of the NCTE Shipboard Connectivity Suite (SCS) and equipment performance within a distributed training event or exercise.

•         Possesses working knowledge of JSAF/NCTE and combat system requirements to support distributed training architectures and/or other M&S experience

•         Possesses knowledge of shipboard installations and conducting SOVT’s. Must be able to obtain the OSHA 10-Hour Maritime Safety Course Certification prior to performing shipboard installation support.

•         Possess the ability to provide technical project leadership, establish milestones, estimate resources, and other project management skills.

Desired experience

•         Combat Systems Coordinator (CSC), Air Warfare Coordinator (AWC), Missiles Systems Supervisor (MSS), Training Supervisor (TRASUP) or Tactical Action Officer (TAO)

•         Proficient with BFTT and ACTS operations, to include training system set up utilizing latest CSOSS procedures and familiarity with training system deltas among various ship baselines (BMD, Non-BMD, and SSDS).

•         Possesses thorough working knowledge of ABMD Aegis Core Tactics & Aegis Core Tactics

•         Familiarity with SSDS training system setup procedures desired

•         COMPTIA Security + Certification

•         COMPTIA Linux + Certification

•         NAVSEA Fiber Optic Certifications


•         Must currently hold and be able to maintain a US Secret clearance
