Job Description

Alion is seeking skilled talent to join a team that produces Live, Virtual, and Constructive gaming simulations for the US Department of Defense.  You will work on generating the 3d real-world terrains used in our software during military events and training exercises, to include elevation maps, ground textures, and splat maps. 

Duties and Responsibilities:

The position requires the candidate to acquire and organize various real world geospatial products for creating terrain databases. The candidate will also need to understand how to go about “cleaning up” the data using industry tools and practices, to include cloud removal from satellite imagery, color correction, and advanced masking and blending techniques. 

This is a unique position that requires a unique skillset. To be successful in this role, you can either have experience as a mid-level geographic information system analyst or a mid-level game environment developer with experience creating and visualizing 3d terrain.

Education and Experience:

Bachelor’s degree and 5-7 yrs of related experience. In some cases educational requirements may be adjusted or waived applicable work experience. Work experience may be adjusted for highly specialized knowledge or uniquely applicable experience.  

Due to the nature of the work, an artistic background is ideal.  A combination of the experiences below may be considered:

GIS related experience must include:

  • 4+ years of experience creating geospatial terrain databases
  • Solid understanding of different geospatial data types and NGA formats
  • Experience working with various geospatial libraries, like GDAL/OGR
  • Experience in Python scripting
  • Experience in ArcGIS, Global Mapper, or TerraTools
     

Game Environment Developer experience must include:

  • Advanced understanding of Photoshop or Gimp
  • Understand the various types of textures that are used in modern game engines, to include the use of splat maps in terrain development
  • Understanding of lighting and shading methods in a 3d environment
  • A background in procedural terrain development is a plus

Must be able to obtain Secret clearance.
