Responsibilities/Qualification

Position Summary
This is an entry-level position.  The ideal candidate will have recently graduated from an accredited college or university with a degree in industrial engineering or very closely related field.  Industrial engineers focus on how to get the work done most efficiently, balancing many factors, such as time, number of workers needed, available technology, actions workers need to take, achieving the end product with no errors, workers’ safety, environmental concerns, and cost.


Duties and Responsiblities:

  • Reviewing production schedules, engineering specifications, process flows, and other information to understand methods that are applied and activities that take place in shipyard manufacturing and services
  • Figuring out how to manufacture parts or products, or deliver services, with maximum efficiency.
  • Developing management control systems to make financial planning and cost analysis more efficient.
  • Enacting quality control procedures to resolve production problems or minimize costs.
  • Designing control systems to coordinate activities and production planning in order to ensure that products meet quality standards.
  • Conferring with clients about product specifications, vendors about purchases, management personnel about manufacturing capabilities, and staff about the status of projects.
  • Developing cost estimates that comply with federal acquisition regulations and supplemental requirements.
  • Analyzing Earned Value Management System policies, processes, procedures, and methods used to plan and control program cost and schedule and to achieve:
  • Accurate progress assessments of technical accomplishment
  • Quantification of technical problems in terms of cost and schedule
  • Objective project cost and schedule status
  • Reliable and timely cost/schedule projections
  • Drill-down capability to trace problems to their source
  • Summarization of significant issues and related impacts
  • Corrective actions necessitated by unfavorable variances
  • A basis for observing valid trends and early visibility into problems

Additional Duties:

  • Assists with defining and developing quality standards for receiving, in-processing and final inspection in accordance with company and contractual requirements.  Reviews in-process rejections.
  • Collects information and data appropriate to a particular area of technical effort.
  • Applies the data to help solve the problem by performing engineering computations, measurements and analyses.
  • Prepares engineering sketches, drawings and tables for inclusion in technical reports.
  • Prepares written inputs to major reports documenting an engineering analysis.
  • Prepares status reports, letters, short technical memoranda, and contact reports.
  • Acts as liaison with other departments, divisions, and organizations.
  • Participates in scheduled project review sessions and in informal interactions with the project sponsor.
  • Regularly participates in the activities of professional societies.
  • Performs additional duties and responsibilities as assigned.

Education and Experience

Bachelor’s degree in industrial engineering or closely related discipline plus 0 to 2 years of directly related experience.

In some cases, educational requirements may be adjusted or waived for more than 10 years applicable work experience. Work experience may be adjusted for highly specialized knowledge or uniquely applicable experience for positions involving new technology or labor market shortages as reflected by market survey data.


Knowledge, Skills, Abilities:

Knowledge of statistical techniques to characterize, prioritize, monitor and improve performance.

Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.

Knowledge of Microsoft Office suite programs, MS Word, Excel and PowerPoint.

Knowledge of the principles, practices, and procedures used in quality engineering.

A security clearance of an appropriate level will be required after employment.
