Responsibilities/Qualification

Position Summary

Under immediate supervision, supports the development of ship drawings, ensuring requirements are defined and met according to specifications. Employs existing guidelines and instructions, guidance from higher-level engineers and experience. Receives immediate supervision from management as well as technical guidance and training from the more experienced technical staff.

Responsibilities/Duties

  • Engineer on Canadian and International Naval or Coast Guard vessel ship contract, functional and detail designs.

  • Will assist in development of customer ship construction specifications and drawing package into system functional and detail design products including shafting and auxiliary/fluid system design, component sizing, equipment/pump selection, pipe sizing and pressure drops.
  • Will assist in development of drawings. Will assist in conducting marine engineering analysis and design for new ship designs. Must be able to work in a team environment and to follow the direction of the team leader.

Education and Experience

Bachelor's degree in engineering or a related scientific discipline plus minimum 0-2 years' experience as a marine engineer. Degree(s) must be in engineering, computer science, mathematics or a related discipline.

In some cases, educational requirements may be adjusted or waived for more than 5 years of applicable work experience. Work experience may be adjusted based on education, or highly specialized knowledge or uniquely applicable experience for positions involving new technology or labor market shortages as reflected by market survey data.

  • Desire experience/knowledge in the design of ships, commercial vessels, Coast Guard and/or Naval vessels to commercial standards. Some understanding of Classification Society Rules, SOLAS and IMO regulations, and industrial standards such as ASTM, ASME, DIN.
  • Understanding/knowledge of performing Class Rule calculations and detail design of propulsion shafting and bearings, fluid systems design, auxiliary equipment selection, pipe sizing, pressure drops, pump selection and material selection.
  • Some proficiency in the use of AutoCAD or Ship Constructor. Good communication and organizational skills and in report writing. Proficient with Microsoft Office Product.
