Job Description


(General) - Responsible for planning, organizing and conducting scientific projects or phases of projects involving design and development of new or improved product and/or processes. Defines and conducts moderately complex scientific measurements and experiments. Records and evaluates data. Develops models describing technical phenomena; evaluates available analytical models for application to specific areas of analyses. Performs moderately complex analysis and trouble-shooting. Responsible for the setup, assembly, use, maintenance, and calibration of equipment (GCMS) and processes. Interacts with sponsor staff responsible for monitoring projects. Reviews progress and defines project priorities, schedules and objectives.

Develops and maintains frequent contacts with customers. Assists in identifying opportunities for new program initiatives and follow-on tasking for current projects and participates in proposal efforts. Prepares and assists others in the development of status reports, letters, technical memoranda, contact reports, technical analyses or other outputs needed. Prepares and provides formal briefings to staff and customers and participates in technical discussions at project review sessions and in negotiations with the customer. Acts as task leader in efforts that are moderately complex in scope.

(Site Specific) - Organizes and directs the daily activities of a specific mobile laboratory location. Responsible for supervising laboratory personnel, and maintenance staff. Assures appropriate quality assurance and quality control policies are followed and implements appropriate corrective action if necessary. Prepares and reviews reports. Maintains assigned budget. Performs GC/MS, or LC/MS/MS laboratory analysis and data validation as required to maintain laboratory throughput. Evaluates operations and makes recommendations to improve operations. Holds planning & strategy meetings.

Suggests modifications to existing protocols & standing operating procedures, equipment, processes or techniques. Participates in evaluation process to include set up, operation & monitoring of equip & apparatus, & more complex experimental procedures involving novel samples. Provides technical guidance, instruction & oversight. Assists with lab maintenance. Schedules experiments, suggests new equip, summarizes & records data in official notebooks, orders supplies & maintains a safe working environment.


Accredited bachelor's of Chemistry degree or a related scientific discipline with 30 hours of chemistry and 4-6 years environmental laboratory experience. An MS degree in chemistry or physical sciences with 30 hours of chemistry and ten or more years of experience as an analytical chemist preferred.

Familiar with a variety of analytical chemistry concepts, practices, and procedures including EPA SW-846 methods and EPA Air Methods. Relies on experience and judgment to plan and accomplish goals. Performs a variety of complicated tasks reporting to the to the Program Manager.

A wide degree of creativity and latitude is expected.

Knowledge, Skills, Abilities

Excellent written and verbal communication skills. Ability to think critically.
Knowledge of chemical/physical principles, theories, and established methodologies sufficient to perform the full range of duties involved in conducting research projects.

Must be able to obtain a Public Trust Certificate upon hire.
