Job Description



Position Summary

Project lead responsible for providing direction to other Designers. Prepares complex sketches, drawings and models on difficult design projects.  Works independently on the development of original designs or adaptations requiring very specialized experience. Schedules, coordinates and verifies work of other Designers and resolves operational problems.

Duties and Responsibilities          

  • Draws structural, mechanical, or electrical features of related structures and equipment. 
  • Reviews literature, standards and current practices relevant to the solution of assigned projects.
  • Prepares sketches or complete detail and layout drawings from verbal or written instructions on the most complex projects.
  • Calculates and lays out dimensions, angles, curvature of parts, materials to be used, and relationship of various parts to the entire structure. 
  • Creates preliminary and/or final drawings and models using standard drafting techniques using computer assisted design.
  • Confers with design originator, appropriate engineering and other personnel in finalizing design concepts.
  • May review completion and implementation of systems additions and/or enhancements and recommends corrections in technical application and analysis to management.
  • Provides work leadership for other Designers and Drafters.
  • Performs additional duties and responsibilities as assigned.

Education and Experience

Associate's Degree in a related discipline, or the equivalent combination of education, technical training, or work experience and 8 to 10 years related experience.

In some cases, educational requirements may be adjusted or waived for more than 12 years applicable work experience. Work experience may be adjusted for highly specialized knowledge or uniquely applicable experience for positions involving new technology or labor market shortages as reflected by 
market survey data.

Knowledge, Skills, Abilities

  • Related experience interpreting design requirements and preparing design alternatives with minimal engineering supervision.
  • Proficient in Computer-Aided Design (CAD) and/or traditional drafting methods.
  • Proficient in reading and interpreting engineering drawings and blueprints.
  • Proficient in interpreting aircraft surface data from point clouds and developing surface contours in SolidWorks from existing data sets.
  • Proficient in SolidWorks for modeling complex parts and assemblies.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Demonstrated leadership skills.
  • A security clearance of an appropriate level may be required after employment.
