Job Description

Alion’s Strategic Materials & Industrial Base Group is seeking a highly-motivated intern to support its risk assessment and mitigation activities for Department of Defense (DoD) customers.

The Strategic Materials & Industrial Base Group is deeply integrated into multiple DoD lines of effort to close industrial base risk under current operational conditions and military operations against a peer or near-peer adversary, in conformance with the 2018 National Defense Strategy. The Group leverages the multi-disciplinary background of its members — geology, materials and chemical engineering, metallurgy, public procurement and government affairs, and commercial best-practices — to provide comprehensive and actionable mitigation plans to the Government. Select high-profile assessments supported by the Group include the reports required by Exec. Ord. 13806 and Exec. Ord. 13817, as well as investigations under Section 232 of the Trade Expansion Act of 1962.

Key skills to be taught by the Group to the Intern are listed below. At the end of the period of performance, the Intern will be assessed for proficiency in—

  • Understanding and clearly communicating the content of DoD budget data

  • Basic familiarity with DoD contracting terminology and tools

  • Independent research for strategic materials assessments

  • Must be enrolled in 4-year college
  • Must be a rising Senior

Desirable Traits:

  • Strong critical and “outside the box” thinking

  • Demonstrated experience with long- (>10 pages) and short-form (1-page) writing

  • Demonstrated primary research and analysis

  • Views uncertainty as an opportunity to create solutions

Recommended Candidate Disciplines:

  • Political Science — with a particular focus on international relations

  • Economics — with a particular focus on developing and improving modeling techniques

  • History — with a particular focus on military history
