Responsibilities/Qualification

This is a temporary, part time position with Alion Science and Technology, Nuclear Services Division located in Albuquerque, NM that prepares a college student for entry into the workforce by providing emphasis on training and gathering experience related to a student’s educational discipline and which is applicable to the business needs of the company.

Alion delivers advanced and specialized Engineering, Innovative Analysis, Design, Testing, Risk Informed Modeling, Simulation, Accident Analysis,  IT, Thermal Hydraulic Modeling, Licensing, CAD Modeling, Plant Operation Solutions and Regulatory Support in the Commercial Nuclear Power Industry.

The position is for college students who are rising Seniors in their academic program, or current graduate students.

Duties and Responsibilities:     

  • Engineering interns provide support for a variety of projects with increasing responsibility based on experience. The project support typically involves data analysis, report preparation, CAD model calculations and reviews, computational fluid dynamics (CFD), post-processing, and software validation. In addition to engineering support, interns may also provide occasional support for administrative or IT issues in the office. Duties often include the collection of information and various data, work in the lab, performance of various tests, engineering computations, measurements, data analyses and 3-D CAD modeling. 
  • Under direct supervision, assists and performs simple to moderately complex engineering related tasks and assignments to help support the various day-to-day activities of technical personnel including project managers.  Duties will vary according to the particular field of the internship and may include the following: Computer aided drafting-CAD, computational fluid dynamics (CFD), Fluid Mechanics, Thermodynamics, technical writing, Microsoft Office, programming, C++, Matlab and nuclear power.

Education and Experience:

Must have a high school diploma or GED and must currently be enrolled as a student in an accredited public or private college or university and be a rising senior in their academic field of study or a graduate student.

Acceptable fields of study include Mechanical, Nuclear, or Chemical Engineering from an accredited college or university.

Knowledge, Skills, Abilities:

  • Experience with any or a combination of the following: Coding, Programing, C++, Matlab or Python (with FUI development), Statistics, Monte Carlo, PRA, 3D CAD Modeling, Autodesk Inventor, Thermodynamics, Heat Transfer,  Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD), Flow 3D and/or COMSOL, Finite Element Analysis (FEA) and ANSYS, required.
  • Good communication skills including the ability to effectively communicate verbally and in writing. This also includes good interpersonal skills, working effectively with a team and being able to interact positively with other staff members, managers and clients, required.
