Responsibilities/Qualification

Alion is actively seeking a creative, highly talented materials engineer with experience supporting Navy submarine structural systems and materials.  This is an onsite position at the Washington Navy Yard.   The candidate will provide support and expertise to multiple leads in Team Submarine, including Materials, Welding/NDT and the Hull, Mechanical, and Major Area Integration Team (MAIT)

Lead and will perform the following duties:

  • Provide direct support to the Material and Welding/NDT SIT Leads in efforts to complete the design and integration of various Submarine Systems.
  • Provide technical review and assessments of issues related to Navy submarine structural systems and/or materials including: hull structures, ferrous metallic alloys, non-ferrous metallic alloys, machinery and piping materials, fasteners, coatings and corrosion control, non-destructive testing, and non-metallic materials. 
  • Facilitate timely decisions in the review and adjudication of all design products and written correspondence by the appropriate NAVSEA technical stakeholders, Strategic Systems Programs (SSP), UK, NAVY Field Activities in accordance with Ship Specifications to meet commitment completion dates.
  • Interface with stakeholders to generate letters and packages for official release. 
  • Establish and manage Materials/Welding/NDT commitments.  Track and report status of commitments.  Attend weekly commitment meetings and other applicable meetings required to support SIT Leads.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Requirements for this position include:

  • Active secret clearance.
  • Engineering degree preferred and five (5) to (10) years of related technical experience.
  • Ability to understand and succinctly summarize, communicate, and document technical issues.
  • Knowledge of NAVY shipboard and submarine systems, and DOD acquisition programs, preferred.
  • Professional knowledge and experience in Materials, Welding, and Mechanical Engineering or equivalent.
  • Knowledge of Navy material specifications, including Navy-adopted commercial specifications and standards.
  • Experience working with NAVSEA is a plus.
  • Must be articulate in oral and written presentations; possess high organizational skills and the ability to multi-task to meet deadlines.   Must be a self-starter, possess excellent interpersonal skills and be able to work directly with various government and contractor representatives to complete assigned tasks in a timely and professional manner independently or with minimal supervision. 
  • Travel about once per month to Groton/New London, CT.
