Responsibilities/Qualification

Duties and Responsibilities:

Under general supervision, the Mechanical Engineer will be responsible for providing technical support for all aspects of requirements development, concept development, engineering, integration and test, and performance analysis as tasked by the Lead Mechanical Engineer in support of the PMS 377 Landing Craft Planning Yard efforts in Boston.

Supports senior technical personnel and project managers within his/her organization in various technical activities related to system and technical product development for life cycle sustainment of LCAC, SSC and LCU 1700. Receives technical guidance and training from the more experienced technical staff. 

During the fulfillment of ongoing job responsibilities, the Mechanical Engineer will apply standard technical concepts, techniques, and procedures to provide assistance to higher-level engineers in the development of technical products directly associated with the Landing Craft Planning Yard efforts. Typically follows guidelines, documentation and provide deliverables that have been established by precedence.

Performs basic engineering work in analysis, design, development, evaluation, planning, testing and operation in support of system and technical product development.

Support to the Program includes:

  • Accountable to the Alion Science Mechanical Engineering team lead in Boston for all efforts relating to the PMS 377 Planning Yard activity.
  • Develop installation drawings and technical packages in support of alteration waivers, deviations and other changes as necessary.
  • Review Technical Manuals and other documentation for accuracy and process all documentation as required to meet schedule requirements.
  • Support the conduct Pre-Overhaul Test and Inspection (POT&I) on various craft in a variety of locations as tasked by the Team Leader.
  • Act as team lead in the team leader’s absence.
  • Develop, revise, update and distribute alteration drawings and Liaison Action Records (LAR), Craft Change Documents (CCD) and other documentation as necessary.
  • Prepare draft configuration control board packages and correspondence relative to alterations as necessary.
  • Perform craft inspections and verify configuration of the craft and currency of craft with the documentation as tasked by PMS 377.
  • Develop and present briefing material (as required) within the company and to the customer.
  • Maintain IDE as required and respond to all tasking within the schedule and technical requirements identified in IDE.
  • Communicate within Alion as necessary to provide accurate assessment of status, issues and other details pertinent to ensure the ongoing success of the Planning Yard efforts in Boston.
  • Other duties and responsibilities as assigned.

Education and Experience

  • Bachelor’s degree plus 2 to 4 years of relevant work experience.  Degree must be in mechanical engineering or a related discipline.
  • In some cases, educational requirements may be adjusted or waived for more than 7 years of applicable work experience.  Work experience may be adjusted based on education, or highly specialized knowledge or uniquely applicable experience for positions involving new technology or labor market shortages as reflected by market survey data.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Knowledge of engineering principles, methods, and techniques within a specific area of expertise.
  • Knowledge of relevant tools, equipment, hardware, and software.
  • Effective organization level communication, presentation and interpersonal skills.
  • Knowledge of Microsoft Office suite programs, MS Word, Excel and PowerPoint.
  • Must be able to obtain and maintain a Secret Security Clearance upon employment.
