Job Description


Position Summary

Under limited supervision, performs complex engineering work related to design, engineering, risk analysis and solutions for a wide variety of special projects in the nuclear power industry. This includes but is not limited to systems and components engineering, fluid flow, chemical and mass transport algorithm development in both FORTRAN and MATLAB. Additional responsibilities may include project management, project planning, customer interaction, client management, business development and regulatory communication and interface.

Works directly with senior technical personnel and project managers in the planning and execution of technical activities on complex projects related to mechanical and nuclear engineering power plant design, operation, licensing and Probability Risk Assessment(PRA).  Employs existing guidelines and instructions from higher-level engineers and scientists, experience and independent judgment to plan and accomplish various task objectives that also include safety related projects.

Performs additional duties and responsibilities involving technical modifications in Nuclear Power Plants utilizing engineering concepts that include:

  • Following Quality Assurance procedure that meet 10 CFR 50 appendix B requirements
  • GSI-191, PRA, Programming(Mat lab, C++, or Python (with GUI development)
  • Simulation experience-CFD using Fluent (ANSYS), Flow 3D, or COMSOL
  • Strong Thermodynamics, heat transfer and fluid mechanics.
  • Statistics-PRA, Monte Carlo, probability theory
  • Laboratory work-fluid flow, heat transfer and chemistry
  • Knowledge in Nuclear Power Plant Systems and/or radiation transport, dose modeling

Defines and organizes various general projects including model and simulation development, mechanical engineering principles into the tasks and activities needed to solve the problems being addressed from various nuclear power plants. Schedules work to meet completion dates and technical specifications. Regularly provides technical guidance and oversight to less experienced technical staff.

Participates in RFQ’s, RFP’s,  technical estimates, manpower estimates and prepares and reviews input to technical reports, status reports, letters, technical data, various technical issues, contract reports and formal briefings. May author or co-author technical reports and participate in EAC evaluation.

Leads and/or participates in technical discussions at project review sessions and in negotiations with the project sponsors or key stakeholders.

Identifies new opportunities for current projects; develops client relationships, takes the lead on specific project proposals, and works through appropriate channels to schedule these presentations and proposals to prospective customers. Provides input and support to proposal development, technical and business development activities and complies with various quality and security procedures

Education and Experience

Bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering or a related scientific discipline plus 5 to 7 years relevant work experience.  Master’s degree preferred. 

In some cases, educational requirements may be adjusted or waived for more than 10 years of applicable work experience.  Work experience may be adjusted based on education, or highly specialized knowledge or uniquely applicable experience for positions involving new technology or labor market shortages as reflected by market survey data.

Demonstrated command of engineering principles, methods, and techniques in area of expertise.

Advanced knowledge of relevant tools, equipment, hardware, and software.

lear, Concise and Effective customer and organizational level communication, presentation and interpersonal skills and knowledge of Microsoft Office suite programs, MS Word, Excel and PowerPoint.
