Job Summary

The Mechanical Technician 5 will review project instructions and aircraft production drawings to ascertain test specifications, procedures, objectives, test equipment, nature of technical problem, and possible solutions, such as part redesign, substitution of material or parts, or rearrangement of parts or subassemblies. Reads and applies design methods to detail drawings to request parts fabrication by machine, sheet metal or wood shops. Devises, fabricates, and assembles new or modified mechanical components or assemblies for products, such as industrial equipment and machinery, power equipment, servosystems, machine tools, and measuring instruments. Sets up and conducts tests of complete units and components under operational conditions to investigate design proposals for improving equipment performance or other factors, or to obtain data for development, standardization, and quality control.  Extensive working knowledge of aircraft mechanics and prototyping of new technologies.  Must be able to work extensive hours on multiple projects to meet customer deadlines.

Knowledge & Skills

  • Knowledge of working prototype mechanical assemblies.
  • Broad knowledge of aircraft sheet metal/structural modifications and repair.
  • Thorough knowledge of aircraft unique tools such as test equipment, torque wrenches, dial indicators, micrometers, sheet metal brakes and sheers.
  • Working knowledge of technical release drawings.
  • Ability to prioritize workload to maintain schedules on assigned projects.
  • Working knowledge of corrosion control techniques and base, federal and Company procedures for handling and disposal of hazardous waste materials.
  • Proficient with metal finishing process to include anodizing, iridizing, wet painting, and powder coating.
  • Ability to read and interpret production build drawings as required and fabricate parts to those drawings with tight tolerances.
  • Ability to obtain a required white license for GSE Equipment
  • Ability to obtain a secret security clearance.

Experience & Education

  • High School degree or equivalent required.
  • Completion of specialized courses in aircraft structural repair is required.
  • 16 years actual and recent experience in the repair, modification, and overhaul of the type of aircraft being serviced.

Physical Requirements/Working Environment

  • May work in conditions outside and inside of a Aircraft maintenance hanger.
  • Must be able to climb stairs, ramps, ladders, and work stands.
  • Must be able to crouch, crawl, grasp or handle objects, use finger dexterity, bend elbow/knee and reach above/below shoulders.
  • May be required to lift up to 50 pounds.
  • Must be able to see imperfections, micrometer readings and other small scales.
  • Must be able to communicate well with others in the team
  • Must be able to distinguish color and judge three-dimensional depth.
  • May be required to operate power vehicles, machinery, hand tools, ground support equipment, fork lift, man lift, etc.

Travel

  • Travel may be up to 50% of the year
  • May vary by location.
