Job Description




As a Lead Naval Architect, you will support three major Shipbuilding programs that fall under PMS385 and be responsible for the following:

  • Provide engineering support to Ship Design Manager.
  • Provide expertise in multiple disciplines (i.e. Structural, Electrical, Propulsion, Damage Control).
  • Develop, review, comment/modify, as necessary, ship specifications and drawings to resolve construction technical issues.
  • Liaise between SDM, NAVSEA PM, shipbuilder, SUPSHIP, and applicable OEMs to resolve system technical clarifications.
  • Perform design reviews, calculations, and participate in technical working groups.
  • Develop technical reports/briefs on design engineering issues and corrective actions.

Required Education, Work Experience, Skills, and Clearance

  • Bachelor’s degree in Naval Architecture or related engineering field such as Ocean Engineering, and 8 to 10 years of relevant work experience directly related to ship design, or equivalent in training and experience. In some cases educational requirements may be adjusted or waived for equivalent work experience. Work expereince may be adjusted for highly specialized knowledge or uniquely applicable experience for positions involving new technology or labor market shortages as reflected by market survey data. 
  • Familiarity with ABS, SVR, and/or IEEE requirements and practices.
  • Senior level understanding and experience with ship system designs.
  • Proven ability to solve complex engineering design problems.
  • Strong communication and customer relations skills.
  • Strong MS Office skills.
  • Active Secret security clearance verifiable in JPAS or the ability to obtain and maintain a clearance is required.


  • Direct experience working in NAVSEA, shipyard, and/or operating a vessel.
