Job Description



The Fairborn Ohio Division is seeking a broadly skilled software engineer to lead Open Architecture (OA) project development in and outside the Alion laboratory developing/modifying/verifying software and hardware conformance to existing OA standards and technologies.  This candidate will develop lab capabilities to support customer requirements, interfacing with technical teams, working with customers to solve their system interface problems, and providing in-depth analytical support. The engineer will provide work leadership and training to less experienced engineers and perform additional duties and responsibilities as assigned.

General Qualifications

The candidate must have experience with existing Open Systems Architecture standards, applications, software development, operating systems, and data modeling.  A working knowledge of avionics, electronic warfare, ISR or other aircraft subsystems is highly desired. The candidate will also be able to define, analyze and review software requirements to meet defined and anticipated customer needs and system quality and performance standards.

Education and Experience

Bachelor’s degree in related discipline plus 5 to 7 years of directly related experience or a Master’s degree and 3 years of experience. Professional certification(s) may be required.

In some cases, educational requirements may be adjusted or waived for more than 10 years applicable work experience. Work experience may be adjusted for highly specialized knowledge or uniquely applicable experience for positions involving new technology or labor market shortages as reflected by market survey data.


  • Active Secret Clearance

  • Working knowledge and application of the Future Airborne Capabilities and Experimentation (FACETM) and Open Mission Systems (OMS) standards and functions.  Experience with HOST, VICTORY, and SOSA desired

  • Avionics software development experience in C, C++, Java, and/or Ada

  • Design software architecture and interfaces and implement functionality.

  • Understanding and identification of various network protocol weaknesses

  • Familiarity with OA interface standards development processes

  • Working knowledge of secure design techniques to improve application security posture

Knowledge, Skills, Abilities:

  • Operating System interfaces (e.g. POSIX, ARINC 629, 429), 1553 desired

  • DOD research, development, acquisition, logistics, and sustainment highly desired

  • Transport services (e.g. CORBA, DDS)

  • Hardware-in-the-loop development/operations, testing and HW/SW interface troubleshooting

  • Graphics experience with OpenGL and/or Vulkan

  • ARINC Characteristics, Reports, and Specifications (e.g. 739A-1, 664, 653P1-3)

  • Networking technologies (e.g. IETF RFCs)

  • Data/Language Modeling (e.g. IDL, MOF, OCL)

  • Military simulator HW/SW operations

  • Airworthiness Certification (e.g. DO-178)

  • Operational Flight Programs (OFPs)
