Responsibilities/Qualification

Plans and designs methods to improve production processes. Reviews existing processes and develops solutions to increase productivity or reduce costs. Ensures compliance with approved production methods and quality standards.  Has knowledge of commonly-used concepts, practices, and procedures within a particular field. Relies on instructions and pre-established guidelines to perform the functions of the job. Works under immediate supervision. Primary job functions do not typically require exercising independent judgment.    

Required Experience and Education:

  • Bachelor’s degree plus 2 to 4 years of relevant work experience.  Degree must be in engineering, computer science, mathematics or a related discipline.
  • In some cases, educational requirements may be adjusted or waived for more than 7 years of applicable work experience.  Work experience may be adjusted based on education, or highly specialized knowledge or uniquely applicable experience for positions involving new technology or labor market shortages as reflected by market survey data.
  • Ship construction or ship repair experience is required.  U.S. Navy or U.S. Coast Guard ship construction or ship repair experience is ideal.
  • This work may occur within an industrial field office, outdoors and/or aboard ship while the ship is undergoing construction, alteration, activation, overhaul, repair and/or underway trials.  Walking and climbing throughout the ship, in order to accomplish ship checks, will be required.  Exposure to high noise levels, uncomfortable temperatures, heights or other industrial safety conditions will require use of personal protective clothing and equipment. 
  • Familiarity with basic ship design criteria, standard shipbuilding practices and change documentation.  Understanding of ship’s drawings and specification documentation.  Technical ship construction coursework, a plus.
  • Must be able to operate personal computers and have good knowledge and operational abilities with Microsoft Office tools (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook E-mail, Access and Project), Adobe Acrobat, and Windows Explorer. 
  • A SECRET security clearance will be required after employment.
