Responsibilities/Qualification

Position Summary

This project management position is for candidates with excellent writing, communication, and organizational skills to support a Research and Development Program. This support will require experience with tracking technical and financial project progress, as well as organizing projects, writing reports, and developing financial budgets and plans. An interest in researching technical subjects, and proven skills in technical project management will help the candidate succeed in this position. The Project Manager will support U.S. Department of Defense (DoD) research and development projects that seek to transition from concept development to implementation.

Duties and Responsibilities

Under direction of a Program Manager, the Project Manager will manage the operational aspects of technical and logistics process projects. Duties will include preparing short and long-term program plans, strategies, and budgets. The Project Manager will prepare agendas, schedule and facilitate meetings, capture and distribute meeting notes, follow-up on action items, and review and archive project documentation. The Project Manager will prepare meeting, program status, and other reports that summarize activities, accomplishments and plans on a weekly basis.

The Project Manager will review the status of projects and budgets, maintain and distribute a meeting calendar, and develop mechanisms for risk mitigation and problem solving with Alion and customer management to meet productivity, quality, and customer-satisfaction goals and objectives.

The projects will also require working with the customer and other industry, academic, and government organizations to assist in the development of project concepts, requirements, goals, outcomes, impacts, and transitions. Furthermore, the candidate may assist in the development of business case and cost savings assessments for research and development projects, develop project reports and presentations, and track financial and technical progress milestones.

Under guidance of division policy, the candidate will operate sound, responsive and accurate financial management and utilize reporting systems, budgeting and financial analysis, and other systems to satisfy the obligations of the program to its customers, and will adhere to legal and regulatory compliance. 

Other possible requirements include:

Interact with customer representatives, including customer management levels, concerning project operations or scheduling.  Participate in briefings and technical meetings with company and customer representatives concerning project operations.

Ensure adherence to Alion administrative policies and procedures, human resource policies and practices as applicable, and contracts administration procedures that support the programs of Alion, and ensure that the contract is administered to protect Alion’s interest and comply with all applicable laws and regulations.

Performs additional duties and responsibilities as assigned.

Education and Experience

Bachelor’s degree, plus 5 to 7 years related experience working in support of a Program Manager on a government contract. Engineering or technical degree is preferred.

In some cases, educational requirements may be adjusted or waived for more than 10 years applicable work experience. Work experience may be adjusted for highly specialized knowledge or uniquely applicable experience for positions involving new technology or commodity logistics.

Knowledge, Skills, Abilities

Must have excellent communication, writing, presentation, interpersonal, and organization skills. Must have excellent ability to organize and manage all program-related documentation including technical, administrative, budgetary and planning.

Strong computer skills, specifically Microsoft Word, PowerPoint and Excel

Ability to work in a team environment.

Strong customer service orientation.

A security clearance of Secret may be required after employment.

Must be a U.S. citizen.
