Job Description

Alion’s expertise in wireless communication is unrivaled.  This includes 50+ years’ of experience performing complex RF Engineering analysis for DoD customers, civilian government agencies, and commercial companies worldwide.  Our expertise in collecting, analyzing, and formatting spectrum data, including RF measurement, frequency assignment, spectrum certification, LiDAR, and other geo-referenced data, enables us to produce refined RF modeling and simulation tools and applications with the reliability and precision needed to assure spectrum access and control.  Alion’s analysis-driven tools support diverse tasks such as spectrum forensics and deconfliction, testing for coverage amid urban clutter, and antenna site planning.  Alion’s Radio Frequency and Electromagnetic Spectrum Engineering Operations (RESEO) offers a variety of work, from projects supporting international satellite coordination to countering IEDs.  Our work is increasingly important in a world that depends on well-coordinated, interference-free spectrum access.

Position Summary

This position focuses on the design and demonstration of RF/Microwave sensors and/or antennas. Tasks will include electromagnetic modeling, component test and evaluation, hardware assembly and analysis and reporting.  The applicant may also support system studies and analyses from concept through detailed design.  The position requires the applicant to develop and maintain a broad range of skills including the ability to: create innovative RF/microwave sensor designs; analyze system performance in a variety of Army scenarios; develop detailed design documents for demonstration systems; procure, assemble and test hardware in a RF laboratory environment; analyze test data and compare to theoretically predicted results, produce reports and papers worthy of a refereed journal.

Under immediate supervision, performs Radio Frequency Engineering assignments of moderate complexity. Assist senior technical personnel in developing direct advisory support in the design, development, and testing of radio frequency (RF) and/or microwave systems architecture, components, circuits, or products.  Performance areas include antenna design, reflector and array systems, and frequency synthesizers for transmitters and receivers.

Supports senior technical personnel and project managers within own organization in various technical activities related to system and technical product development. Receives general supervision from management as well as technical guidance and training from the more experienced technical staff. 

Responsibilities          

Performs basic engineering work in analysis, design, development, evaluation, planning, testing and operation in support of higher-level engineers in the development of system and technical products.  Typically employs pre-established guidelines and instructions, and limited experience and judgment to plan and accomplish task objectives.

Duties often include the collection of information and data, performance of various tests, and engineering computations, measurements and analyses.  Exhibits the ability to independently perform basic data validation and troubleshooting.

Has some independent interaction with customers and provides input to project managers on programmatic and technical deliverables under guidance of more senior technical personnel. 

Complies with applicable quality and security procedures in the performance of duties. Provides recommendations for improvements to existing quality systems and applicable company procedures and guidelines. 

Knowledge, Skills, Abilities

Knowledge of relevant tools, equipment, hardware, and software.

Effective organization level communication, presentation and interpersonal skills

Knowledge of Microsoft Office suite programs, MS Word, Excel and PowerPoint

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree and 0 to 2 years of related experience.  Degree must be in Electrical Engineering, Mathematics, Physics, or Computer Science
  • Knowledge of the theoretical and practical operation and performance of antennas, receivers, exciters, and associated signal processing components and algorithms
  • Strong analytical skills
  • Proficiency at data analysis using software tools such as MatLab
  • Experience with measurement instruments (spectrum analyzer, network analyzer, power meters, oscilloscope, etc)
  • U.S. Citizenship is required
  • Ability to obtain a Secret security clearance is required
