Responsibilities/Qualification

Alion is seeking an experienced nuclear or chemical engineer/scientist to support a dynamic, multidisciplinary team at a government facility in Chantilly, Virginia. The successful candidate will work to develop methodologies and processes for the full spectrum of counter-WMD planning – from developing and running models through interpreting and documenting results, to preparation of technical reports and briefing the results.

SECURITY CLEARANCE: Candidate must possess an active TS/SCI, or a Top Secret clearance with a current SSBI, and be eligible to obtain a TS/SCI w/ poly level clearance.

PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Use exploitation products, intelligence resources and engineering expertise to characterize selected facilities.
  • Provide engineering guidance and judgment throughout the characterization process to produce accurate estimates.
  • Work within a matrixed team including engineers, scientists, modelers (physics-based, agent-based and structural) and intelligence analysts.

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS: 

  • Master’s degree in Physics, Chemistry or Nuclear Engineering or related field + 10-12 years’ experience; Advanced degree (PhD) in Physics or Nuclear Engineering or related field is preferred
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills with the ability to successfully brief and interact with Senior Officials.
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced, high-energy environment.
  • Experience working in CONUS or OCONUS nuclear or chemical facility
  • Military or defense-related experience and an understanding of operational planning is a strong plus.
  • Expert knowledge of scientific principles, theories, and established methodologies sufficient to perform the full range of duties involved in conducting research projects.
  • Excellent customer and organizational level communication, presentation and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to think critically.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office suite of tools

ADDITIONAL DUTIES:

  • As the organizational expert, serve as the technical specialist for the organization in the application of complex and advanced scientific theories, concepts, principles, and processes. Recognized within Alion and the technical community as an authority in one or more scientific disciplines.
  • Work directly with senior personnel, program managers, and external organizations in the planning, oversight, execution, and evaluation of multiple complex technical and scientific solutions. Acts independently on issues within his/her field of expertise.
  • Provide advisory and consulting expertise to technical projects under development, acting as a recognized authority in the scientific field of expertise.
  • Stay abreast of developments in field of expertise. Documents scientific topics. May author scientific reports.
  • Evaluate the effectiveness and accuracy of theories and postulations.
  • Keep abreast of new scientific methods affecting area of responsibility.
  • Develop and provide final technical review of major technical reports, status reports, letters, technical memoranda, contract reports and formal briefings.  
  • Prepare and provide formal briefings to staff and customers, as needed.
  • Lead technical discussions at project review sessions and in negotiations with customers.
  • Interact with the sponsor, government officials and recognized experts in scientific field.
  • Contribute original ideas and innovations to both solicited and unsolicited proposals that result in the expansion of ongoing programs or new program starts.
  • Develop related briefings and provides understandable and compelling presentations of technical ideas/proposals.
  • Advise, counsels and mentors staff regarding quality science research and services provided to the customer.
  • Perform additional duties and responsibilities as assigned.
