Position Summary

Alion Science and Technology Corporation is seeking a Senior Nuclear Weapons Effects Scientist to provide Systems Engineering and Integration (SE&I) support to a major DoD Agency located in Albuquerque, NM at Kirtland AFB for operational test events. Minimal travel (<2%) to the National Capital Region (NCR) may be required.


  • Provide review on various sensors, data acquisition technologies, and systems used in nuclear event characterization testing with focus on nuclear air blast, nuclear ground shock, fire ignition, thermal, and dust/debris used in nuclear event characterization testing.
  • Provide review of technical activities including data collection, analysis, and reporting.
  • Develop test plans and methodologies to meet measurement objectives to support customer testing and provide post-test assessments to determine diagnostics and system performance, and how well diagnostics met test objectives.

Education and Experience:

  • A Master’s degree in Nuclear Engineering is preferred and a minimum of 8-10 years’ experience working directly with radiological monitoring in a test and evaluation (T&E) environment is required..
  • US Citizenship is required: Active/current Top Secret (TS) with ability to obtain TS/SCI.
  • Knowledge of nuclear weapons effects, including transport and dispersion modes and casualty estimates, blast and shock, large thermal output, electromagnetic pulse, initial nuclear radiation (primarily gamma rays and neutrons), and residual radiation.
  • Knowledge of and experience using weapons effects tools, including Hazard Prediction and Assessment Capability (HPAC) and the Second-Order Closure Integrated Puff SCIPUFF model,  Sandia National Laboratory’s NUKE code, Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory’s LWAC and K-Division Defense Nuclear Agency Fallout Code (KDFOC).
  • Effective organization level communication, presentation and interpersonal skills.
  • MS Office proficiency and ability to work in an individual and team environment.
  • Experience in supporting C-WMD test planning and execution desired.
