Position Summary

The Senior Prinicpal Scientist serves as a Functional Expert Consultant to the United States Navy Naval Postgraduate School in Monterey, CA.

This position is contingent upon contract award.


  • As an expert in one or more scientific disciplines,  possesses and applies an advanced knowledge of highly complex and significant scientific theories, concepts, principles, and processes to the completion of projects of major complexity. Recognized within Alion and the external community as an expert in the field through extensive professional publications and/or patents and as acceptance as a Fellow or Senior Fellow in specialty.
  • Works across organizations in support of program development and technical execution on technically complex high impact programs.
  • Sets technical direction and conducts execution oversight for high visibility technically complex programs.
  • Maintains a liaison role on technical matters with staff and customers and has significant latitude for independent action and decision making in field of expertise
  • Provides advisory and consulting expertise to technical projects under development, acting as a recognized authority in the scientific field of expertise.
  • Carries out experiments/research of a highly complex and significant nature and directs the research, testing and analysis activities.
  • Has significant latitude in making independent decisions on technical problems and solution methods.
  • Stays abreast of developments in field of expertise. Is a recognized authority across multiple areas of expertise, as evidenced by an appropriate bibliography of reports, scientific papers, designs, and/or patents; represents the company in outside discussions and technical forums.
  • Evaluates the effectiveness and accuracy of theories and postulations.
  • Provides assurance that technical projects are performed in a technically proficient manner and ensures conclusions and recommendations are supported by the analyses presented.
  • Develops and provides final technical review of major technical reports, status reports, letters, technical memoranda, contract reports and formal briefings.  
  • Prepares and provides formal briefings to staff and customers, as needed.
  • Leads technical discussions at project review sessions and in negotiations with customers.
  • Interacts with the sponsor, government officials and recognized experts in scientific field.
  • Serves as program team lead.  Prioritizes issues, plans approach, and works with program managers to develop schedules and staffing plans to support program delivery milestones. 
  • Complies with applicable quality and security procedures in the performance of duties.  Establishes and monitors standards for internal quality programs.  Provides recommendations for improvements to existing quality systems or applicable company procedures and guidelines.
  • Contributes original ideas and innovations to both solicited and unsolicited proposals that result in the expansion of ongoing programs or new program starts.  Develops related briefings and provides understandable and compelling presentations of technical ideas/proposals.
  • Advises, counsels and mentors staff regarding quality science research and services provided to the customer.
  • Performs additional duties and responsibilities as assigned.

Education and Experience

  • A master's degree in a science or engineering field is required and 12 years of relevant experience.  A Ph.D. is preferred.
  • Seven years experience with defense and unmanned systems, three of which are direct support to DoD related activities is required.
  • Must have experience providing high-level presentations and white papers for system engineering reviews, product development, analysis, and validation and verification of engineering solutions.
  • Expert knowledge of scientific principles, theories, and established methodologies sufficient to perform the full range of duties involved in conducting research projects.
  • Excellent customer and organizational level communication, presentation and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to think critically.
  • The candidate is required to be able to obtain and maintain a SECRET clearance.
