Job Description


The Systems Engineer (SE) will work onsite at Product Manager Ground Sensors (PMGS) and will provide technical expertise (optical engineering) to the development and maturation of the PMGS technology portfolio.
The PMGS technology portfolio includes the Driver's Vision Enhancer (DVE) for driving combat vehicles and tactical wheeled vehicles; Second Generation FLIR (2GEN FLIR); Third Generation FLIR (3GEN FLIR); Long Range Advanced Scout Surveillance System (LRAS3); Vehicle Optics Sensor System (VOSS); Intelligent ground systems (IGSs); Unattended ground sensors (UGSs); Gunshot Detection System (GDS);  Boomerang Generation III (BG III) ; Close Access Target Reconnaissance (CATR); and the Unattended Transient Acoustic MASINT System (UTAMS).
Under limited supervision, the SE plans, designs, fabricates, and experiments with a variety of complex electric or electronic components, apparatus, circuits, and information pathways for use in the PMGS technology portfolio. 
Determines conditions under which tests are to be conducted, conducts experimental tests and analyzes the results of data collections. 
Works directly with senior technical personnel and stakeholder project managers in the planning and execution of technical activities on complex projects related to the PMGS technology portfolio development.
Employs existing guidelines and instructions, guidance from higher-level engineers, experience, and independent judgment to plan and accomplish task objectives. Assignments may require the development of improvements to current techniques and procedures.
Applies advanced technical concepts, techniques, and procedures to lead a project team in the development of technical products supporting the PMGS technology portfolio. Identifies and documents project functional requirements.
Defines and organizes a proposed project into the tasks and activities needed to solve the problems being addressed.
Schedules work to meet completion dates and technical specifications. Regularly provides technical guidance and oversight to lower level technical staff.
Receives limited technical guidance and training from more experienced technical staff.  Plans, results, and work products are reviewed periodically by senior technical staff.
 Prepares and reviews input to technical reports, status reports, letters, technical memoranda, contract reports and formal briefings.   May author or co-author technical reports.
Prepares and provides formal briefings to the staff and project sponsors. Leads technical discussions at project review sessions.
Complies with applicable quality and security procedures in the performance of duties. Provides recommendations for improvements to existing quality systems or applicable procedures and guidelines.


Bachelor's degree in Systems Engineering with Optics, or Optical Engineering plus 5 to 7 years relevant work experience in a research and development environment with significant exposure to technologies in the PMGS technology portfolio.

Competence working in a systems engineering environment, with a demonstrated understanding of how their specific skill sets and competencies must integrate with others in the larger whole to produce sophisticated sensor systems that work.

DoD Secret Clearance required

Travel:  20 - 30% of the time
