Position Summary:

Alion is seeking a software engineer with a background in C, C++, Java, and/or Ada.  This position involves Open Architecture (OA) project development both inside and outside of the Alion laboratory, by developing, modifying, integrating, and verifying software and hardware for implementation and conformance to existing OA standards and technologies.  This candidate will also help in developing lab capabilities to support customer requirements, interfacing with technical teams, working with customers to solve their system interface problems, and providing in-depth analytical support.

General Qualifications:

The candidate must have experience with software development and integration.  Additionally, experience in system standards, applications, software development, operating systems, and data modeling is desired.  A working knowledge of avionics; electronic warfare; Intelligence, Surveillance, and Reconnaissance (ISR) sensor systems; flight controls; or other aircraft subsystems is highly desired as well. The candidate will also be able to define, analyze, and review software requirements to meet documented and anticipated customer needs, system quality metrics, and performance standards.


  • Active or recent (less than two years) Department of Defense (DoD) Secret Clearance  
  • BS in Computer Engineering, Computer Science, or related fields is required, plus 5 years experience, MS preferred,
  • Software development experience in C, C++, Java, and/or Ada
  • Understanding and identification of various network protocols
  • Working knowledge of secure design techniques to improve application security posture

Desired Knowledge:

  • Operating System interfaces (e.g. POSIX, ARINC 629, 429), 1553 desired
  • Transport services (e.g. CORBA, DDS)
  • Hardware-in-the-loop development/operations, testing and HW/SW interface troubleshooting
  • Graphics experience with OpenGL and/or Vulkan
  • Networking technologies (e.g. IETF RFCs)
  • Data/Language Modeling (e.g. IDL, MOF, OCL)
  • Operational Flight Programs (OFPs)
  • Working knowledge and application of the Future Airborne Capabilities and Experimentation (FACETM) and Open Mission Systems (OMS) standards and functions; experience with HOST, VICTORY, and SOSA is also desired
