Job Description

The Software Engineer working on the Entity Configuration Management team is responsible for the entities and munitions in the software simulation used by the Navy to support distributed Fleet Synthetic and LVC Training. Joint Semi-Automated Forces (JSAF) is the core simulation product in the Navy Continuous Training Environment (NCTE), which is comprised of many distributed simulation systems and interfaces used to support Navy and Joint Training, as well as Navy concept development and experimentation. JSAF provides high-fidelity models for over 6000 entities, munitions, and sensors.  The NCTE Software Engineering team is directly responsible, in this context, for developing and maintaining technical solutions and standards to provide the greatest level of training capability to the warfighter, at the lowest possible cost, at the fastest pace achievable.

Duties and Responsibilities

Under direct supervision, this developer will work with a team of developers and subject matter experts to develop and maintain the data files representing real world entities, e.g., ships, aircraft, tanks, radars, sonars, guns, missiles, etc.

Primary development is done on Red Hat Linux 6/7 platforms.  Shell and Python scripts are used to help automate tasks and query information.  C++ code is used to generate entity mapping files used between different DoD simulation tools.  Git is the primary revision control system.

Performs additional duties and responsibilities as assigned by NTB Software Engineering leadership.

Education and Experience

Bachelor’s degree in Engineering, Computer Science or related discipline plus 0 to 2 years of directly related experience developing and maintaining software. Subsequent employment, achieving employer funded Security+ and Linux OS certification will be required if the successful candidate does not have them already.

In some cases, educational requirements may be adjusted or waived for more than 3 years applicable work experience. Work experience may be adjusted for highly specialized knowledge or uniquely applicable experience.

Knowledge, Skills, Abilities

  • Required
    • U.S. Citizen able to obtain and maintain a Secret security clearance
    • Ability to obtain related technical certifications
    • Strong written and oral communication skills and ability to work in a team environment
  • Desired
    • Experience with scripting languages, such as Python or shell scripts
    • Experience with a Linux/Unix environment
    • Experience using Software Configuration Management Tools such as SVN or GIT
    • Experience with and understanding of object oriented (OO) design and development
  • Favorable
    • C/C++ development experience
    • Experience with Databases such as PostgreSQL
    • Python development experience
    • Security+ and Linux+ certifications
    • Experience in Modeling and Simulation (M&S) design
    • Military domain experience
