Qualifications

Bachelor’s degree in engineering, mechanical engineering, marine engineering, systems engineering, or a related discipline plus 5-7 years relevant work experience. 

In some cases, educational requirements may be adjusted or waived for more than 6 years of applicable work experience in US Navy surface combatant Combat Systems related billet.  Work experience may be adjusted based on education, or highly specialized knowledge or uniquely applicable experience applicable experience for positions involving new technology.

  • Professional Engineer (PE) certification desirable.
  • Experience working with Navy ship and ship system design principles and practices.
  • Familiarity with reviewing and evaluation of proposed C5I Combat Systems ICPs, ECPs and SHIPALTs to determine technical and programmatic impact and recommended course of actions on shipbuilding systems engineering issues.
  • Experience working with applicable regulatory, commercial, and military standards and classification society rules desired. Experience working with ship system design programs and methods a plus.
  • Knowledge of DDG 51 acquisition program and processes a plus.
  • Applicant must have excellent oral and written communications and be capable of productive and efficient work with limited or no supervision.
  • Must be able to present complex ideas and create presentations for senior military and civilian leaders.
  • Applicant must be proficient with Microsoft Office programs. 
  • Candidate should have an active secret clearance for this position or ability to obtain and maintain a SECRET Clearance.

Responsibilities

Under supervision provide support to clients developing and maintaining U.S. Navy surface ships systems and associated subsystems. Provide production and testing support including engineering support for hull, combat systems and electrical systems; total ship engineering; ship surveillance; and all types of waterfront engineering and inspections. Review shipbuilder work packages, drawings, Initial Change Proposals (ICP), Engineering Change Proposals (ECP), waterfront changes, work items, and participate in design reviews.  Be able to assess, evaluate and provide recommendations regarding test events issues that may affect combat systems.

  • Review Combat Systems initial designs, developments, and analysis of new ships and/or ship systems.
  • Assist in development of designs for current and conceptualized ships, systems, and equipment. Evaluate designs for feasibility. Review ECP packages for completeness and provide recommendations.
  • Assess compliance with naval regulatory and design standards.
  • Interfaces with stakeholders and cross functional teams to ensure necessary resources are available for ship/system.
  • Participate in all Combat Systems Configuration Management and logistics (PARMs, Design Reviews, TDPs, Change Boards, etc.) meetings.
  • Review qualification test procedures and participates in qualification testing and trials.
  • Supports production design and construction oversight and review processes to ensure compliance with product specifications.
  • Researches new technology and/or development tools to remain informed of current technology.
  • Travel Requirement ~15%
  • Maintain communications with SUPSHIP, NAVAIR, SPAWAR and other commands, to enhance the C4I linkage to AEGIS Combat Systems including laboratories and support contractors in resolving technical issues impacting (or have potential to impact) the design or performance of the ship class.
