Job Snapshot

Job Description

Alion is looking for a high energy,  self-starter on an exciting program critical to US defense.  The successful candidate will work as Senior Sustaining Engineer in support of the U2 Sensors and Systems upgrade as part of the Robins AFB U2 Systems Program Office.   The U2 program has been removed from retirement planning and an intense modernization program is underway across platform, sensors, system and other facets of the weapons system.

Sustaining engineering consists of a combination of Systems Engineering and product support life-cycle management strategies to achieve the desired sustainment metric outcomes for the program. These metrics include the DoD required Key Performance Parameter (KPP) of Availability, the Key System Attributes (KSAs) of Reliability and Total Ownership Cost (TOC), the recommended metric, Mean Down Time, plus other subordinate program metrics. The focus is on understanding the cost and logistics infrastructure and footprint associated with meeting the Warfighter requirements and the process to track, control and/or reduce metric results over the life cycle of the weapon system. The successful candidate for this position will be intimately involved with all acquisition activities to ensure sustainment needs are fully addressed across sensors and systems.

Sustaining Engineering spans those technical tasks (engineering and logistics investigations and analyses) to ensure continued operation and maintenance of a system with managed risk. This includes:

  • Collection and triage of all service use and maintenance data
  • Analysis of safety hazards, failure causes and effects, reliability and maintainability trends, and operational usage profiles changes
  • Root cause analysis of in-service problems (including operational hazards, deficiency reports, parts obsolescence, corrosion effects, and reliability degradation)
  • The development of required design changes to resolve operational issues
  • Other activities necessary to ensure cost-effective support to achieve peacetime and wartime readiness and performance requirements over a system’s life-cycle

The successful candidate will apply professional knowledge of scientific and engineering concepts, principals, phenomena and relationships to: assess specific requirements, delineate appropriately engineered designs, and develop preliminary and final design plans, engineering specifications, cost estimates and procurement packages in support of the operation, preventive maintenance and repair of mission critical systems and equipment. Specifies functional requirements, will oversee designs and testing of  components, will analyze designs, and oversee  component integration.  Critcally evaluates overall design effectiveness, cost, reliability, and safety.

This position requires a technical background and DoD acquistion experience in excess of 10 years. A clearance with ability to be placed in an SCI position is mandatory.

BS degree in Engineering from various technical disciplines are acceptable; DoD acquisition certification, and familiarity with the U2 program.
