Responsibilities/Qualification

Position Summary

Great junior level System Administrator position available in Norfolk, VA supporting work for the Navy Continuous Training Enviornment!  In this position you will be responsible for the continuous operation of servers, networks and related infrastructure supporting information systems.   This is an excellent opportunity to begin a career in System Administration.  You will install new software releases, patches, updates and manage the overall configuration to ensure it is up to date and secure.  Monitor critical systems and create status reports/incident tickets as required.  Document baseline configurations and develops standard operating procedures (SOPs).

Duties and Responsibilities          

Assists with the daily operational maintenance, support, and upgrades for operating systems, workstations and servers.

Serves as a front line resource interface to users with technical issues.

Installs new software releases, system upgrades, evaluates and installs patches and resolves software related problems of limited complexity following standardized practices and procedures.

Uses systems management software to monitor servers and applications, troubleshooting basic problems and coordinating with other teams when problems occur.

Assists with the development, testing and maintenance of a disaster recovery plan.

Supports applications development project teams with the development of test servers, testing new system configurations and providing guidance on system performance issues.

Assists with testing and evaluating network hardware and software to determine compatibility with current systems.

Performs equipment reviews, development of maintenance histories, management and maintenance of hardware inventories.

Supports site upgrades, site inspections, site audits, or other site evaluations.

Monitors network traffic and makes necessary recommendations for additional resources or hardware.

Drafts and maintains system documentation.  Drafts and monitors policies and standards for allocation related to the use of computing resources.

Ensures workstation/server data integrity by implementing standard software and hardware solutions.

Ensures data/media recoverability by following a schedule of system backups and database archive operations.

Conducts basic hardware and software audits of workstations and servers to ensure compliance with established standards, policies and configuration guidelines.

Performs additional duties and responsibilities as assigned.

Education and Experience

Bachelor’s degree Computer Science or related discipline plus 0 to 2 years of directly related experience.  In some cases, educational requirements may be adjusted or waived for comparable work experience. Work experience may be adjusted for highly specialized knowledge or uniquely applicable experience for positions involving new technology or labor market shortages as reflected by market survey data.

Knowledge, Skills, Abilities

Excellent technical and analytical skills.

Familiar with the principles, practices, and procedures used in systems administration.

Strong interpersonal skills and ability to work with technical and non-technical personnel.

Related technical certifications including Security +, Linux+ or other operating systems certifications.  Preference given to candidates who meet DoD 5870 compliance requirements.

Clearance:

Candidates must hold an active a DoD Security Clearance to begin employment.
