Job Description


Position Summary
Writes and edits complex technical documents, including deliverables, manuals, reports, specifications and procedures in conformance with the Alion writing and documentation review process

Duties and Responsibilities
Prepare instruction manuals and other supporting documents to communicate complex and technical information more easily.  Determines the clearest and most logical way to present information and instructions for greatest reader comprehension and writes and edits technical information accordingly

Develop, format, proof, edit/revise, and produce technical documents that meet the program/organization standards.

Plan, develop, organize, write and edit operational procedures and manuals

Produce electronic documentation in addition to hard copy manuals

Maintain a comprehensive library of technical terminology and documentation

Analyze documents to maintain continuity of style of content

Manage updates and revisions to technical literature

Meets with subject matter experts in order to ensure that specialized topics are appropriately addressed and discussed

Follow the standard design, layout, and format of the documentation using approved software tools. Prepare graphics to support documentation including screen captures, scanned images, digital photos, and line art.

Revises, edits, or updates instructions, technical information, and frequently asked questions as necessary

Carry out the duties of a peer writer by reading and reviewing the work produced by the other technical writers within the department.

Assist in Microsoft Access database development and design using Microsoft Access and VBA

Perform software testing of database updates to ensure design will operate efficiently and accurately once implemented

Investigate database errors and research complex problems to restore database function during outages

Performs additional duties and responsibilities as assigned

Education and Experience
Bachelor’s degree in a related discipline plus 5 to 7 years of directly related experience.

In some cases, educational requirements may be adjusted or waived for more than 10 years applicable work experience. Work experience may be adjusted for highly specialized knowledge or uniquely applicable experience for positions involving new technology or labor market shortages as reflected by
market survey data.

8+  years of experience in technical writing and Microsoft Access development

Knowledge, Skills, Abilities

  • Expert user of Microsoft Word, Microsoft Excel, Adobe Acrobat,  Microsoft Project, Microsoft Access, VBA Programming
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills
  • Ability to translate systems and process into technical documentation
  • Proven problem-solving and demonstrated teamwork skills
  • Skilled at prioritizing and multi-tasking, ability to work under pressure
  • Strong attention to detail
  • Familiar with Adobe Framemaker
  • Familiar Adobe Photoshop
  • Familiar with iPDM

Must be able to obtain and maintain a Secret Clearance.
