Responsibilities/Qualification

Summary

The Technical Operations Specialist is a member of the Navy Continuous Training Environment (NCTE) Integrated Systems Division (ISD) engineering staff in support of the Navy Training Baseline (NTB), Navy Trainers, and the NCTE.  The ISD provides systems engineering solutions for the integration of NCTE live, virtual and constructive simulation technologies in support of US Fleet Forces (USFF) and the Number Fleets training and certification requirements.   USFF and the Numbered Fleets conduct synthetic training and mission certification events between pierside ships, ships underway, virtual trainers and training centers during Fleet Synthetic Training (FST) and Live, Virtual and Constructive (LVC) training events such as the composite training unit exercise (COMPTUEX).

The Technical Operations Specialist supports the NCTE program by configuring the NTB and its interfaces to other Navy, Joint, Coalition and LVC training systems and employing distributed modeling and simulation technologies.  The NTB contains the Navy’s core simulation application Joint Semi-Automated Forces (JSAF) as well as other common simulation tools and interfaces such as the Joint-BUS (JBUS).

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Installs and configures NTB software releases, upgrades, and patches
  • Evaluates and resolves moderately complex software related problems.
  • Uses systems management software to monitor servers and applications, troubleshooting problems and coordinating with other teams when problems occur.
  • Coordinates with software developers in order to enhance effectiveness of existing M&S toolset as well as to identify candidate controlling and monitoring processes that can be streamlined and automated by NTB software efforts.
  • Supports site upgrades, audits, and other evaluations
  • Develops and maintains technical architecture, configuration, and status documentation.
  • Develops and monitors policies and standards for allocation related to the use of computing resources.

 

Education and Experience

Bachelor's degree in Information Technology, Information Systems or related discipline plus 2 to 4 years of directly related experience is required. In some cases, educational requirements may be adjusted or waived for more than 7 years applicable work experience. Work experience may be adjusted for highly specialized knowledge or uniquely applicable experience.

Qualifications

  • Understanding of Linux and Windows operating systems and be able to use advanced capabilities such as (but not limited to): scripting, network interface configuration, device configuration, domain management, file sharing/mapping, etc.
  • Networking concepts, architectures, and transport technologies like TCP/IP
  • Ability to utilize network and distributed modeling & simulation tools such as Wireshark, PLEXSYS, and SIMDIS
  • Knowledge of Distributed Simulation protocols such as High Level Architecture (HLA) and Distributed Interactive Simulation (DIS) is preferred
  • Knowledge of Navy C4I tactical systems such as Link 16 and GCCS is preferred
  • Ability to analyze and troubleshoot distributed simulation problems and provide acceptable solutions or corrections
  • Experience working with Navy systems and/or commands desirable but not mandatory.
  • CompTIA Security + and Linux+ certifications are required for the position and special consideration may be given for candidates with these certifications.  If candidate does not already possess these certifications, training and certification exam will be provided for the right candidate.
