Job Description

The Naval Simulation Testing Center Pacific (NSTCP) Training Systems Integrator is a member of the Navy Continuous Training Environment (NCTE) Modeling & Simulation (M&S) Integrated Systems Division (ISD) engineering staff in support of the Navy Training Baseline (NTB), Navy Trainers, and the NCTE.  The ISD provides systems engineering solutions for the integration of NCTE live, virtual and constructive simulation technologies in support of US Fleet Forces (USFF) and the Number Fleets training and certification requirements.   USFF and the Numbered Fleets conduct synthetic training and mission certification events between ships, virtual trainers and training centers during Fleet Synthetic Training (FST) events and other deployment certification events such as the COMPTUEX (C2X).

The NSTCP Training Systems Integrator works onsite at the NSTCP and performs engineering and project management activities in direct support of Office of Naval Research (ONR) initiatives that help fill Navy training gaps through experimentation and prototyping of new technologies like augmented reality, virtual reality, and legacy system interfacing.

Duties and Responsibilities

The NSTCP Training Systems Integrator has the following duties and responsibilities:

  • Functions as lead integration engineer for projects involving integration of prototype simulations or trainers within the NCTE R&D environment.
  • Performs laboratory configuration management activities to ensure a stable R&D environment
  • Supports ONR Fleet Synthetic Training Research and Development Events (FST-RDT&E) which showcase new and emerging prototype training capabilities
  • Coordinates all other engineering functions within the NCTE organization (i.e. networks, operations, information assurance, security engineering, software engineering) in support of FST-RDT&E.
  • Coordinates with engineers from other organizations to ensure timely integration of prototype capabilities in support of ONR FST-RDT&E requirements and goals.
  • Periodically fills the role of technical lead in support of FST and C2X training exercises.  In this role, the Integration Engineer is the liaison between the NCTE M&S Operations Event Lead and the engineering department and is responsible for identifying and responding to simulation problems, notifying leadership of issues and coordinating with engineering resources to correct or work around the problem in order to ensure training success.

Education and Experience

Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Computer Engineering or related discipline plus 2 to 4 years of directly related experience is required. Highly prefer 5+ years of related experience.
In some cases, educational requirements may be adjusted or waived for more than 7 years applicable work experience. Work experience may be adjusted for highly specialized knowledge or uniquely applicable experience.  Experience working with Navy systems and/or commands desirable but not mandatory.

  • Networking concepts, architectures, and transport technologies like TCP/IP
  • Network troubleshooting both physical and logic
  • Ability to utilize network and distributed modeling & simulation tools such as Wireshark, PLEXSYS, and SIMDIS
  • Knowledge of Distributed Simulation protocols such as High Level Architecture (HLA) and Distributed Interactive Simulation (DIS)
  • Familiarization with Object Oriented Design (OOD) concepts and techniques
  • Knowledge of Navy C4I tactical systems such as Link 16 and GCCS
  • Ability to analyze and troubleshoot distributed simulation problems and provide acceptable solutions or corrections
  • Ability to provide technical project leadership, establish milestones, estimate resources, and other project management skills
  • Must have excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • CompTIA Security + and Linux+ certifications are required for the position and special consideration may be given for candidates with these certifications.  If candidate does not already possess these certifications, training and certification exam will be provided for the right candidate.
