Job Description

Position Summary

This position supports an environmental laboratory in Edison, NJ.

Responsibilities

Responsible for planning, organizing and conducting scientific projects or phases of projects involving design and development of new or improved product and/or processes. Defines and conducts moderately complex scientific measurements and experiments. Records and evaluates data. Develops models describing technical phenomena; evaluates available analytical models for application to specific areas of analyses. Performs moderately complex analysis and trouble-shooting. Responsible for the setup, assembly, use, maintenance, and calibration of equipment and processes. Interacts with sponsor staff responsible for monitoring projects. Reviews progress and defines project priorities, schedules and objectives. Develops and maintains frequent contacts with customers.

Assists in identifying opportunities for new program initiatives and follow-on tasking for current projects and participates in proposal efforts. Prepares and assists others in the development of status reports, letters, technical memoranda, contact reports, technical analyses or other outputs needed. Prepares and provides formal briefings to staff and customers and participates in technical discussions at project review sessions and in negotiations with the customer. Acts as task leader in efforts that are moderately complex in scope.

Operate and maintain state-of-the-art instrumentation in a constant ready-state to mobilize to a site to analyze air samples collected at terrorist events, emergency responses, hazardous waste sites, and oil spills. Perform the various analyses using EPA-approved methods, ASTM, OSHA, and NIOSH methods. Conduct on-site, multimedia, organic and inorganic chemical analyses. Conduct on-site air monitoring and multi-media sampling, including microbiological agents of concern. Conduct sampling operations under Level A, B, C, and D conditions. Conduct routine air monitoring/sampling at hazardous waste sites and oil spills. As part of the Site-Specific Quality Assurance Project Plans, submit for EPA approval, draft site-specific air sampling and analysis plans to include, when applicable, the use of the trace atmospheric gas analysis and other such mobile direct air sampling instruments, utilize SOPs to perform air sampling plans, and submit final data reports on each site. 

Provide air dispersion and emission rate modeling in support of the assessment of air impacts of potential or ongoing chemical releases (emergency response modeling), baseline emissions from uncontrolled hazardous waste sites, air emissions associated with specific cleanup technologies, etc. Perform reviews of guidance documents as they relate to monitoring, sampling, analyses, and modeling of terrorist events, emergency responses, hazardous waste sites, oil spills, ambient air matrices, or indoor air matrices. Recommend options for evaluation and improvement of monitoring, sampling, analyses, and modeling methodologies for emergency responses, hazardous waste sites, oil spills, ambient air matrices, or indoor air matrices. Conduct indoor air quality studies, which includes residential vapor intrusion studies.
